Biography
After an encounter with Team Rocket where James kicked Mankey to get rid of it because it was annoying them in their attempt to capture Ash's Pikachu, in its rage it evolved into a Primeape. Primeape didn't take too kindly to the way it was treated by Team Rocket and it ended up punching Jessie in the face. In the process, Ash Ketchum's hat came off Primeape's head but just as Ash's Pikachu went to recover it, Primeape cornered Ash's Pikachu. Brock tried to reason with it but just ended up getting punched so hard he went flying into the air.

It took Ash's Squirtle, Ash's Bulbasaur and then finally Ash's Charmander to capture Primeape. Just before Ash's Charmander's Flamethower was about to burn Ash Ketchum's hat and Primeape, Ash's Pikachu jumped over Primeape and recovered his hat. The combination attack proved to be enough to weaken Primeaple so that Ash Ketchum was able to throw a Poké ball at it. Just after Ash Ketchum caught Primeape, Team Rocket appeared at the top of the pit and Ash Ketchum threw his newly captured Primeape into the pit with them.

P-1 Grand Prix Martial Arts Tournament

In PM29, Anthony's daughter Rebecca told Ash Ketchum and his friends that in order to win the P-1 Grand Prix Martial Arts Tournament, her father Anthony holed himself up in the mountains and wouldn't come home at all despite the pleading from her. Ash Ketchum and Brock agreed to enter the tournament in order to beat Anthony so that he'd come to his senses and return home to his family. Ash's Primeape did very well in the tournament. In its first round it defeated a Machop after a shaky start but it managed to quickly adapt to the trained fighting skill and showed its superior strength. It then battled a Machamp and advanced to the final round against Giant's Hitmonlee. After Team Rocket's plan to electrify Ash's Primeape failed, it finished off Giant's Hitmonlee with a powerful Seismic Toss which knocked it out. Ash's Primeape won the P-1 Grand Prix.

Anthony watched Ash's Primeape win the P-1 Grand Prix and was very impressed. He told Ash Ketchum that Primeape might be a fighting prodigy as it had shown potential to grow into something grand. Anthony asked Ash Ketchum if he could train his Primeape and Ash Ketchum agreed. Before leaving, Ash Ketchum finally conveyed his feelings to Primeape and told it that parting is tough but they would certainly meet again at some point. Ash's Primeape was touched by Ash Ketchum's farewell and looked sad to part ways as Ash Ketchum continued on his journey.
