A gust of wind blows. Three boys are in an alley. In front of them is somewhat of a red monster. The monster is known as Red Lightning. Everyone in the city seems to know about it. One of the brave boys sends out Poliwag so it can battle the monster. The other two boys are scared and want to run. Red Lightning inches closer towards them. Poliwag uses Water Pulse, but Red Lightning easily dodges the attack. Red Lightning fires a Hyper Beam, knocking Poliwag out. Then Red Lightning goes up to Poliwag and draws a few marks on it. After that Red Lightning flies away.
Ash and co. continue their way towards the Battle Tower. They come across a Pokémon Center, and right beside is a shopping mall. May wants to check out the shopping mall. She leaves the group. Ash, Brock, and Max walk inside the Pokémon Center. Brock, again, shows his love for Nurse Joy, but Max pulls him away. The three boys from earlier walks in the Pokémon Center. One of the boys holds out his Poliwag, the one with markings on it. They tell Nurse Joy that Red Lightning caused it to happen. Nurse Joy explains to Ash, Brock, and Max that Red Lightning is a Pokémon that talks and has never been defeated before. It usually challenges people to battles, and then leaves its mark on the loser Pokémon.
Team Rocket has overheard the conversation. They think a Pokémon that can't be beat would be perfect. They want to capture Red Lightning. Meanwhile, May is in the park reading her guide book. She is also feeding her Pokémon some Pokeblock. When May is done reading her book, she returns her Pokémon back into their Pokéballs. However, Squirtle is missing. May sees Squirtle smelling a flower near a Butterfree.
Suddenly, a gust of wind picks up blowing the Butterfree away. Red Lightning appears above May. It wants to battle May's Squirtle. May agrees to the battle. Squirtle uses Water Gun, but Red Lightning dodges it. Then Red Lightning fires a Hyper Beam. Squirtle dodges the attack and tries Water Gun again. Again, Red Lightning dodges and takes close aim on Squirtle. It uses another Hyper Beam, this time hitting Squirtle. Then Red Lightning leaves its mark on Squirtle and flies away.
May brings Squirtle to the Pokémon Center. She shows Ash and co. her Squirtle. Ash and co. now have to find out who Red Lightning is. They begin to search the town for it. They hear a scream, and Ash and co. run to an alley. They see a girl and her Chansey. Chansey has just been defeated by Red Lightning. Suddenly, a gust of wind blows. Red Lightning stands on a nearby fence. Ash wants to know why Red Lightning is battling people. Red Lightning's answer is because he feels like it. Red Lightning then challenges Ash to a battle. Red Lightning uses many of its skills and speed to dodge Pikachu's attacks. Suddenly, a net is thrown towards Red Lightning, and Red Lightning dodges that too. Team Rocket appear in their balloon, and they say their motto. Meowth fires another net, but Red Lightning dodges that one too. Then Red Lightning begins to escape.
Ash and co. jump into Team Rocket's balloon. They tell Team Rocket that they have to work together in order to catch Red Lightning. James and Meowth aren't too sure, but Jessie agrees to it. They begin to follow Red Lightning. They are led to a building on top of a skyscraper. A girl is outside with a computer. Ash and co. jump out of the balloon. The girl presses a button and a rocket that is disguised as a tree flies up and hits Team Rocket's balloon, causing them to blast off.
Ash and co. hide behind a small house. They see the girl and Red Lightning talking to each other. The girl sees Ash and co. and they are caught. The girl is angry at them for trespassing. Ash wants to know if the girl and Red Lightning are related to each other. Apparently, the girl and Red Lightning are related to each other. The girl doesn't even care of the harm she caused the other Pokémon to have. A butler comes out of the big house and tells the girl to stop causing trouble. The butler refers to the girl as Luna. Luna ignores the butler. She challenges Ash to a battle. Ash gladly accepts the battle.
Red Lightning uses Hyper Beam. Pikachu dodges the attack with Quick Attack. Then Pikachu uses Thunderbolt and Red Lightning uses Swift. The two attacks collide into each other. The blow reveals a cape that was wrapped around Red Lightning. Red Lightning happens to be a Scizor. A mini camera and speakers falls off of Scizor's throat. Pikachu can't match Scizor's speed. Ash recalls Pikachu back and sends out Sceptile. Sceptile begins to chase Scizor. Scizor uses another Hyper Beam and Sceptile uses Agility to dodge. Unfortunately, the wind affects Sceptile, causing it to get hurt by the Hyper Beam. Brock now understands that Scizor is using the wind as an advantage. Scizor begins to get closer to Sceptile. Ash thinks of something to save Scizor. Scizor fires another Hyper Beam, but this time Sceptile uses the wind as its own advantage. It dodges the attack. Using the wind, Sceptile starts flying. It hits Scizor with Leaf Blade. Scizor begins to fall, but Sceptile catches it and brings it to safety.
Luna wonders why Ash had Sceptile save Scizor. Ash tells her that Scizor was in trouble. The butler mentions that Luna is lonely. Because her mother and father are famous inventors, they are extremely busy. Luna inherited the skills her mother and father had and she was able to create great inventions. Then Luna trained a Scyther and evolved it into Scizor. The butler then tells Luna that she can't keep on causing trouble for everyone. May walks up to Luna. May tells Luna that she participates in Pokémon contests and sometimes misses her own mother and father. May understands how Luna feels, and so she offers to battle her. This makes Luna happy. She accepts May's challenge.
The battle with Scizor and Squirtle begins. Scizor's first attack is Swift. Squirtle endures the attack by using Withdraw. Then Squirtle fires a Water Gun, but Scizor dodges the attack using its awesome speed. Then Squirtle uses Ice Beam. Scizor dodges the attack as well, but when it lands, it slips and falls. Squirtle charges towards Scizor with Rapid Spin. Scizor flies in the air, but Squirtle jumps and hits Scizor. Scizor falls and is knocked out.
Luna thanks May for the battle. She had a lot of fun. The butler tells May that there will be a Pokémon Contest in a nearby town. May can hardly wait for the contest. Ash, Brock, and Max are happy that they solved the mystery of Red Lightning because now every can rest peacefully.
