Ursula's Minun was first seen in the practice yard for the Daybreak Town Pokémon Contest alongside Ursula's Plusle. Upon seeing it and Plusle, Dawn became extremely frightened of them, as the Cheering Pokémon had revived Dawn's childhood fears, and passed out shortly after the two Pokémon shocked her causing her hair to go frizzly and sparkle. It was later revealed that Dawn had developed a fear for Plusle and Minun from when she was still in kindergarten.

Ursula used her Plusle and Minun in the battle rounds of the Daybreak Town Pokémon Contest. The Cheering Pokémon were used against Jessie's Seviper and Yanmega in the first battle round, where they managed to easily block their opponents' attacks and overpower them with their combination moves, thus aiding Ursula in easily subtracting a great deal of points from Jessie, and eventually winning the battle.

After defeating other co-coordinators too, Ursula reached the final battle round of the contest, where her Plusle and Minun faced off against Dawn's Mamoswine and Cyndaquil. Plusle and Minun's combined Encore rendered their opponents helpless and susceptible to their attacks. However, after Dawn got encouraged by her Mamoswine and Cyndaquil, she managed to overcome her fears and pull off a turnaround victory by perfecting her Flame Ice combination, which resulted in her deducting enough points from Ursula before the timeout.
