POKÉMON AND NETFLIX TEAM UP FOR GLOBAL RELEASE OF ‘POKÉMON: MEWTWO STRIKES BACK—EVOLUTION’

Newest CGI Animated Pokémon Movie to Debut Exclusively on Netflix on Pokémon Day, February 27, 2020

BELLEVUE, Wash., and LOS ANGELES—January 21, 2020—The Pokémon Company International and Netflix announced today that the newest animated movie based on the beloved Pokémon franchise will premiere on Netflix around the world outside of Japan and Korea. “Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution” welcomes a new CGI style to animated Pokémon movies and is inspired by one of the most popular stories in the long-running franchise. The movie was a major hit in Japan, where it premiered as one of the top-grossing films during its opening weekend last year.

“The ubiquitous reach and expert team at Netflix make them the perfect partner to bring this special animated movie to kids and fans around the world,” said Emily Arons, senior vice president of international business at The Pokémon Company International. “Netflix is the ideal platform to help us execute a global simultaneous launch of an animated Pokémon movie on Pokémon Day, a special moment dedicated to celebrating the worldwide Pokémon fan community.”

“Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution” synopsis: When researchers discover and exploit a fossil of the Mythical Pokémon Mew, they unleash a creation that goes against the very laws of nature: Mewtwo, a Legendary Pokémon intended for use as a tool of destruction. But as Mewtwo becomes aware of its own dubious origin, it begins to resent its human creators and seeks revenge—and Ash, Pikachu, and their friends find themselves at the center of its rampage! With the future of the Pokémon world at stake, will our heroes be able to overcome Mewtwo’s challenge…and will Mewtwo be able to find a new meaning for its life?

To celebrate the announcement, The Pokémon Company International released the first official international trailer for the movie today, which can be viewed here on the official Pokémon YouTube channel.

Pokémon GO’s shared AR experience feature allows you and up to 2 friends to interact with your buddies and take AR snapshots.

To access the shared AR experience feature, AR+ must be turned on in your Settings menu. To use AR+, your device needs to meet the following requirements:

  • iOS: AR+ mode is only available for iPhone 6s and newer models running on iOS 11+.
  • Android: AR+ mode is only available to devices running Android 7.0+ and can support ARCore. Supported devices must install ARCore from the Google Play Store. A list of supported devices can be found here.

To enter a shared AR experience:

  1. Tap your buddy’s portrait in the bottom left of the Map View, next to your Trainer’s portrait.
  2. Tap the shared experience Image icon.
  3. Host a group by tapping Create a Group Code.
  4. Have other players scan your QR code to join.

To start a shared AR session, everyone in the group should hold their devices upright and point towards the same 3D object in a flat, open area nearby. Move left and right together until you see a Pokémon shadow with yellow footprints, then tap the shadow to place your buddy.

While in a shared AR experience, you can feed your buddy snacks or play with them just as you would on your own, but you won’t be able to interact with your friends’ buddies. Interacting with your buddy in a shared AR experience will award you Affection hearts.

Taking a Group Snapshot
To take a snapshot of the buddy Pokémon in the shared AR experience, tap the Camera button at the bottom of the screen. When you try to take a group snapshot, your Trainer nickname will be visible to the other players participating.

Niantic has announced details of a new featured called Buddy Adventure which will be coming soon to Pokémon GO. The new feature which will launch in 2020, allows players to have their buddy by their side in your Pokémon GO explorations.

Image

Buddy Adventure coming soon—even more ways to explore, grow, and bond with your buddy!

Trainers, world with your Buddy Pokémon! In the all-new Buddy Adventure feature, your buddy will be by your side in your Pokémon GO explorations like never before.

Buddy Adventure is an elevated bonding experience for Trainers and their buddies. You’ll get to know your Buddy Pokémon’s mood as you increase your Buddy Level by playing with your buddy, feeding your buddy treats, and battling and exploring with your buddy. In addition, swapping Buddy Pokémon no longer resets progress toward earning Candy. Like any great Pokémon Trainer, you’ll find that the world around you will become richer with Pokémon by your side as they grow with you and help you along your journey.

The Buddy Adventure feature set will roll out to Trainers around the world by 2020.

Image

The Berry that blossomed into friendship
Kick off your buddy adventure by feeding your buddy Berries. This will increase your Buddy Level to Good Buddy, and you’ll see your buddy on the map, following right behind you! To feed your buddy, just head to the new buddy profile page, tap on Play!, and interact with your buddy. You can also give your buddy a quick treat directly from the buddy profile page. Each Pokémon has different quirks and ways to express itself. Watch closely to see a diverse range of movements and expressions, whether you and your buddy are playing together or exploring the world around you!

Along with feeding your buddy, you can also play with it! Watch what your buddy does when you interact with it in AR+ mode. Different Pokémon react in different ways! Make sure you have AR+ turned on in your Settings.

Unlock exciting new Perks with Buddy Adventure
As you and your buddy get closer and your Buddy Level increases, you’ll get to unlock exciting new Perks together! The Buddy Levels are Good Buddy, Great Buddy, Ultra Buddy, and Best Buddy.

  • Good Buddy: Your buddy can join you on your map view! You’ll also see how your buddy feels on the buddy profile page.
  • Great Buddy: Having a hard time catching a Pokémon? Your buddy may help you out in Pokémon encounters! It can also bring you items that can help you in your Pokémon GO journey.
  • Ultra Buddy: Your buddy will help you explore the world around you by letting you know about interesting places nearby! Your buddy will also bring you Souvenirs, which you can keep track of on the buddy profile page.
  • Best Buddy: Become Best Buddies, and your buddy will sport a Best Buddy Ribbon to show off to everyone just how close you two are! Pokémon that you’re Best Buddies with can get a CP boost in combat as long as they’re still assigned as your Buddy Pokémon.
Image

How to become better friends with your buddy
Become better friends with your buddy by earning affection. Affection is measured by hearts, and you can earn hearts with your buddy by exploring with your buddy on the map, battling with your buddy, playing with and feeding your buddy, and taking snapshots of your buddy. The more affection you earn, the better your buddy’s mood will be!

When you reach the highest mood (excited), you can unlock the following Perks:
  • The distance it takes for your buddy to find Candy will be cut in half.
  • The number of hearts earned per action will double.
  • Trainers can earn bonus hearts!

With the upgraded buddy profile page, you’ll see your buddy’s progress toward finding Candy, your buddy’s current mood, a chart of daily activities you can do to earn affection with your buddy, and your Buddy Level! You’ll also be able to see the history of other Pokémon who have been your buddy and the adventures you’ve shared together. Remember: friendship is something you build together! So be sure to complete the daily activities with your buddy each day to earn more affection and become fast friends!

Coming soon: Meet your (real-world) buddy’s buddies, too! After Buddy Adventure is available to Trainers around the world, there’ll be even more to look forward to. Soon, your buddy will be able to meet your fellow Trainers’ buddies in Shared AR Experience mode!

In the new Shared AR Experience mode, you can sync up with up to two other Trainers with AR+ to take a group photo with your buddies together! It’ll be the perfect chance to create your own epic Pokémon moments and capture new Pokémon memories with your friends!

Image Image

We hope you have a blast discovering all the new ways you can bond with your Buddy Pokémon, Trainers! Be sure to share your favorite buddy moments and photos with #PokemonGOBuddy once the feature is released.

Dev Insights: Discovering more with Buddy Adventure

Image

Trainers, The bond between Trainers and their Pokémon has been at the core of every part of the Pokémon franchise, from the main-series games to the anime and beyond. The partnership between a Pokémon and its Trainer is built on trust, and as with any great partnership, those involved grow together, play together, and explore together. In the new Buddy Adventure feature, Trainers worldwide will be able to experience what it’s really like to have a Pokémon exploring the world with them.

Collaborating with our partners like Best Buddies!
“Since launching Pokémon GO, this might be the most collaborative feature we have had with The Pokémon Company,” shared Ryuta Hiroi, the lead Niantic product manager on the project. “Even with your phone in your pocket, you’ll feel like your buddy is right beside you!”

Niantic tech artist Lena Verstappen added to the point about collaborating with our partners, mentioning that there was a deeply respectful way in which each and every Pokémon was treated throughout the process of developing the features.

Each Pokémon species has been designed to express itself in distinct ways, and the team here at Niantic found itself time and again charmed by Pokémon. From tackling the fact that Exeggcute has six heads to taking on the challenge of feeding an Alolan Exeggutor (“How do you feed something so tall?” said Lena), everyone came away with a deeper appreciation for not only the partnerships we had but for the Pokémon themselves.

“It’s almost as if each Pokémon were a family member!” Lena shared. “How they eat, how they walk, and even where the Best Buddy Ribbon should be placed on each Pokémon’s body—all of this and more was taken into account when crafting an as-immersive-as-possible experience.”

“I’m surprised by the number of Pokémon I’m falling in love with from interacting with them,” said Laura Warner, the lead game designer on the project. “Like watching a Spheal roll behind me on the map... I just care about Pokémon unlike ever before. We’re excited for Trainers to try out different buddies and see how each one becomes their friend!”

Image

Challenges along the road to exploration
Buddy Adventure touches on almost every aspect of Pokémon GO. You see your buddy on the map, you use your buddy in battle, and your buddy helps you when you catch Pokémon. Developing something as ambitious as this feature set was an interesting challenge for the team to tackle head on.

“When a feature is so all encompassing, it’s important to break it up from a development standpoint,” says Trey Williamson, the lead technical program manager on the feature. “What was Buddy Adventure’s ideal experience? What defines that ‘successful’ experience for a Trainer? It was very much a learn-as-you-go kind of process.” Determining what Trainers would want out of Buddy Adventure really helped the team focus their development on the most important parts of the feature.

Image

Designing relationships with both Niantic and Pokémon values
Niantic products and features strive to bring people together in real life, get people moving, and encourage people to explore the areas around them and discover new places.

When the Buddy Pokémon feature was first released, we introduced the ability for Trainers to walk with their buddy to get Candy, which encourages exercise. Buddy Adventure will feature more discovery and exploration mechanics than ever before. Upon reaching a certain Buddy Level, buddies will be able to alert their Trainers whenever an interesting PokéStop is nearby. The upcoming shared AR mode creates a meaningful real-world social experience by letting up to three Trainers place their Pokémon in the same space and take a photo together. We hope that features like this will enrich Trainers’ lives as they discover even more places alongside their buddies.

Our core design philosophy was not the only guiding compass when developing Buddy Adventure. We also wanted to make sure it still fit within the Pokémon universe. In this case, we wanted Trainers to be able to feel as if their buddy is a true partner and friend—just like in the sorts of partnerships they’ve seen in various Pokémon series in the past!

The experience of Buddy Adventure goes beyond the AR experience. You see your buddy on the map. Your Pokémon is growing alongside you. Your Pokémon can help you in Pokémon encounters once you reach a certain Buddy Level, which really makes you feel like your Pokémon is there to help you. It creates a special feeling. You and your buddy have a real partnership.

—Ethan Chan, technical lead for Buddy Adventure and Pokémon GO client engineer
Introducing: Your Buddy Adventure!
We feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have been able to work on a feature that will let Trainers get closer to their Pokémon while exploring the world around them. We cannot wait for you all to experience Buddy Adventure and create memories and relationships with your Buddy Pokémon that will last!

Today, The Pokémon Company International and Nintendo shared more information regarding the recently discovered Gigantamax Snorlax, Evolutions of Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble, and the Legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta, for the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield video games, available now exclusively on the Nintendo Switch system. High resolution artwork and screenshots from the press release have been added to an Imageboard thread.

MORE POKÉMON SIGHTED IN POKÉMON SWORD AND POKÉMON SHIELD AND COMING TO THE POKÉMON TRADING CARD GAME

Over 50 Galar Region Pokémon Make Their Pokémon TCG Debut in New Sword & Shield Expansion, Featuring Powerful New Game Mechanic, Pokémon VMAX

logo

The Pokémon Company International also unveiled Sword & Shield, the first new expansion for the Pokémon Trading Card Game: Sword & Shield Series that is based on the latest video games. Sword & Shield will offer a new type of card and game mechanic called Pokémon VMAX—beautifully illustrated and powerful cards that showcase Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon such as Gigantamax Snorlax. Trainers will be able to collect, trade, and play with Pokémon VMAX when the set launches around the world on February 7, 2020.

POKéMON SWORD AND POKéMON SHIELD

logo

Gigantamax Snorlax
Type: Normal
Height: 114'10"+
Weight: ???
Ability: Immunity / Thick Fat

Thanks to the power of Gigantamax, the Berry seeds and small rocks that were tangled in Snorlax’s belly fur have undergone explosive growth. With a tree sprouting upon its belly, Gigantamax Snorlax has the majesty of a great mountain. Even though it almost never moves, Gigantamax Snorlax is said to be one of the strongest Dynamax Pokémon discovered. When the time comes for it to battle, it lifts its upper body by just a tiny amount and attacks by flailing with its arms and legs—actions that actually pack a tremendous punch. When Snorlax is Gigantamaxed, its Normal-type attacks will be transformed into G-Max Replenish. G-Max Replenish doesn’t just deal damage to targets—it can also restore any Berries that Gigantamax Snorlax’s allies have eaten during the battle.

Gigantamax Snorlax will appear more frequently in Max Raid Battles from Wednesday, December 4, until early January 1. Trainers can check out the Pokémon Dens that dot the Wild Area to battle this gigantic form of Snorlax. A connection to the internet will be required to participate in Max Raid Battles. Connecting their Nintendo Switch system to the internet will automatically enable Trainers to encounter the latest Pokémon appearing in the Wild Area. Players can also achieve the same results manually by opening the X menu in their game, selecting Mystery Gift, and then selecting Get the Wild Area News.

The Evolution of First Partner Pokémon

logo

Thwackey
Category: Beat Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 2'4"
Weight: 30.9 lbs.
Ability: Overgrow

Grookey’s Evolution has caused its stick to change as well. The stick has split into two, and it uses them to keep rhythm. To be able to drum faster and longer than anyone else, it devotes itself entirely to its practice with these sticks. Sometimes Thwackey becomes so focused on its practice that it doesn’t even hear the orders of its Trainer. To develop its sense of rhythm, Thwackey keeps the beat alive during its daily life. It walks while swaying back and forth to a beat and drumming with its sticks. Some Thwackey have even been seen to keep rhythm while eating.

logo

Rillaboom
Category: Drummer Pokémon
Type: Grass
Height: 6'11"
Weight: 198.4 lbs.
Ability: Overgrow

As Thwackey evolves, its two sticks develop into two sticks and a stump drum. In battle, Rillaboom unleashes powerful sound waves with its drumming and throws opponents about by controlling the roots of its stump. The skills it honed while it was a Thwackey are put on full display. Rillaboom has a gentle nature and won’t involve itself in trivial fights. However, it is extremely sensitive to any actions that could risk the harmony around it and keeps such actions strictly in check. Rillaboom also has a strong sense of solidarity with others, and it will fight ferociously when its allies are in trouble.

logo

Raboot
Category: Rabbit Pokémon
Type: Fire
Height: 2'
Weight: 19.8 lbs.
Ability: Blaze

The fur that covers Raboot’s body has changed to become more effective against cold weather. This thick fur is also good for controlling the Pokémon’s fire energy, which allows it to unleash its full power in a shorter amount of time. The temperature on its brow and the soles of its feet has increased since evolving, and Raboot uses these areas to deal flaming-hot headbutts and kicks. Favoring the powerful legs it gained through Evolution, Raboot keeps both hands tucked into the thick fur around its waist when it acts. To better train its kicking attacks, Raboot tries not to use its hands at all, which also seems to be effective in keeping it from losing body heat. It’s also not unusual for Raboot to jump high and kick down Berries that grow in tall trees, juggling them on its feet as it eats them.

logo

Cinderace
Category: Striker Pokémon
Type: Fire
Height: 4'7"
Weight: 72.8 lbs.
Ability: Blaze

Cinderace has excellent physical abilities and boasts some of the best skills among all Pokémon when it comes to explosive force, jumping ability, and kicking power. It’s got a strong core and great balance, meaning that it can unleash powerful kicks from any position. Cinderace attacks using a soccer ball made of fire, which it creates by pouring its fire energy into a small stone. It plays with opponents by using its artful footwork—kicking its ball about as it feints this way or that to throw opponents off in their timing or putting a spin on the ball for an attack that’s hard to evade.

logo

Drizzile
Category: Water Lizard Pokémon
Type: Water
Height: 2'4"
Weight: 25.4 lbs.
Ability: Torrent

Drizzile uses its long and dexterous tongue, which is coated in mucus, both for battle and for eating. This tongue is usually kept within its mouth, but when necessary, it can be launched in a quick shot to strike at Drizzile’s prey. It’s only during these moments that this usually lethargic Pokémon demonstrates a shocking degree of focus. Drizzile is a very cautious Pokémon. It sets up numerous traps in the area where it lives, using the Water-type moves it excels in. It also engages in hit-and-run tactics utilizing the landscape around it and devises strategies that take full advantage of its ability to turn invisible when wet.

logo

Inteleon
Category: Secret Agent Pokémon
Type: Water
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 99.6 lbs.
Ability: Torrent

Inteleon’s rail-thin body hides a variety of surprising tricks within it. Its fingertips can fire out water that has been compressed within its body—shooting it out at a speed of Mach 3—to hit opponents where they’re weakest. Inteleon also has special lenses in its eyes and a sharp knife hidden in its tail. These hidden tricks allow it to adapt to any situation. Inteleon possesses great intellect and thinks deeply about things, calmly and deliberately. It is also known for its chivalrous behavior. In battle, it analyzes the weaknesses and habits of its opponents to devise strategies against them. Inteleon also appears to show absolute loyalty to Trainers it has recognized as worthy.

New Details about the Legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta

logo

Zacian
Category: Warrior Pokémon
Type: Fairy/Steel
Height: 9'2"
Weight: 782.6 lbs.
Ability: Intrepid Sword

Zacian attacks its foes using the sword it grips in its mouth. The sword’s edge is extremely sharp and can tear through the thick scales of Dragon-type Pokémon as if they were paper. Zacian dashes through the battlefield to strike its enemies with the speed of a swift wind. Its graceful movements are beautiful to behold and have been compared to a dance. Zacian’s slashing attacks possess a speed that makes them impossible to see with the naked eye, and those hit by its blade are cut down before they can even feel pain from the blow. With this Steel-type physical move, Behemoth Blade, the sword in Zacian’s mouth grows to gigantic proportions and is used to slice at a target. It is especially strong against Dynamax Pokémon, and the impact of it slams through a Dynamax Pokémon’s body to deal devastating damage. The destructive power of this move is said to be enough to cut the ocean in two.

logo

Zamazenta
Category: Warrior Pokémon
Type: Fighting/Steel
Height: 9'6"
Weight: 1730.6 lbs.
Ability: Dauntless Shield

Zamazenta fends off the attacks of foes by using the golden shield that covers its front. The shield’s strength is so formidable that even the sharp claws of Dragon-type Pokémon cannot leave a single scratch upon it. No battlefield, no matter how terrible, can make Zamazenta flinch in its resolve. It will charge the enemy lines head on to defeat its opponents. Its shield-like armor provides impregnable defense but is also a weapon to be used in powerful attacks. When Zamazenta bashes into opponents with all its might, it’s said that the destructive force is enough to put cracks in the land and that the resulting shock wave can lay waste to hundreds of enemies. With this Steel-type physical move, Behemoth Bash, the winged armor on Zamazenta’s front grows to gigantic proportions and is used to bash into a target with devastating force. It is especially strong against Dynamax Pokémon, and the impact of it slams right through a Dynamax Pokémon’s body to deal devastating damage. The destructive power of this move is said to be enough to bore straight through towering mountains.
