The next episode of the Pokémon anime, episode 50, airs Friday May 17th, 2024 and features Dot finally taking her Terastal training assessment test! As such, we've received a comment from Kaede Hondo-san, who plays Dot's opponent for the test, Gym Leader Nanjamo:

When we were recording this episode, the "batori" had a tremendous impact on me. I played my part with enough intensity to keep up with the energy I felt from it, so I'd say this episode is an absolute must-see! The episode doesn't just depict a battle either, it also shows Dot growing and developing mentally, which I think you should pay attention to as well.

Nanjamo is inherently an entertainer, and acting out the intense Nanjamo's even more intense battling required some serious energy, but before I knew it I got completely caught up in the moment and had tons of fun with these scenes! I'll be really happy if you guys have fun watching it as well!

On May 17th, 2024, the official Japanese AniPoke Twitter account reminded that this episode was available to watch on the official Japanese YouTube channel. The video was region locked to Japan only. It was available from May 17th, 2024 to May 24th, 2024. This episode was specifically labeled as a missed-program webcast (見逃し配信).

The episode was also available on the TV Tokyo YouTube channel and the Official Corocoro Channel and were labeled as limited-time delivery (期間限定配信). The TV Tokyo version included the series trailer at the end of the episode where as the Corocoro version had beginning and ending bumpers promoting Corocoro.

Hakko City Gym Leader Nanjamo made an appearance in the popular anime Pocket Monsters (airs on the TV Tokyo Network every Friday at 6:55pm, officially abbreviated "Anipoke") in episode 50 (which aired on May 17th, 2024), where she battled Dot as part of the latter's Terastal training assessment test. To celebrate this, Oricon News interviewed Kaede Hondo about what makes Nanjamo such an appealing character. The official Japanese Anime PR X account reposted a Tweet by @oricon_anime_ to promote the interview.

In episode 50, "Terastallize for Social Media! Dance Dance Kuwassu!!", Dot and Kuwassu are going to take Nanjamo's assessment test. They had researched Nanjamo's battles in advance, developed a strategy and taken infallible countermeasures... or so they thought, but they still end up struggling greatly against Harabarie, who's a poor type matchup for Kuwassu. In addition, an unexpected incident takes place...

Q: You've played Nanjamo in the show last year as well, but this is the first time she's appearing in the role of a Gym Leader. Have your impressions of her changed since back then, or have you discovered anything new you really like about her?
Hondo: I think Nanjamo is still the same entertainer who tries to make those around her have a good time that she always was, but this new episode made me discover how she actually battles. She likes imagining how excited the viewers get from watching the battle, which is also why she does a lot of wordplay like referring to battles as "batori", but she's also a character who's constantly considering whether or not she can win, and I could really feel how fast-thinking she was when I played her.

My personal interpretation is that her nature as an entertainer led to her not engaging her opponent on a personal level even though it was Dot she was fighting this time, but instead made her want to teach by putting on a "batori" she herself was enjoying to the fullest.

Q: The episode also showed a side of her that was acting as Dot's senior, guiding her as she grew and developed one step further, didn't it?
Hondo: Yes, when Nanjamo was talking to Dot face-to-face, the sound director instructed me to give her advice "as a person, not as a streamer". That scene really showed how human Nanjamo is; She's kind and caring, always willing to help, and she's clearly very fond of Dot.

Q: So there's a difference between "Nanjamo the streamer" and "Nanjamo the person"?
Hondo: I think something like 90% of her dialogue is "Nanjamo the streamer", and she's so energetic in that role that I was gasping for air as I was recording her lines (laughs). However, while there ARE also times where she's being "Nanjamo the person", like when she's talking privately with Dot, I don't know if that's actually her genuine self or just another side of her she's putting on for show... and I don't mean that in a bad way, I just feel she's a very enigmatic and mysterious character.

Q: What were the dubbing sessions like, were there any particularly memorable moments?
Hondo: Nanjamo's lines were recorded at the same time as Harabarie's, something that really made me realize that you just can't play a role like this as well without having the Pokémon's voice actor there recording alongside you. Like, when I was giving orders during the battle, Harabarie would respond like THIS, and the reply would have have THAT kind of substance to it, so I'd try giving the orders more of a sense of distance... things like that. I'm extremely grateful we got to record together and would love to do it some more. Harabarie is just so adorable...

Q: Have you received any feedback on your portrayal of Najamo in the Pokémon anime yet?
Hondo: The first video game that was ever bought for me was Pocket Monsters Leaf Green, and my family has been buying and playing the games whenever they come out ever since then, so they were absolutely ecstatic (laughs). Nanjamo is one of my favorite characters, so it made me really happy to be offered this role, and I loved being able to tell my family about it as well. It truly felt like my hard work as an actress had really paid off. And of course, since Nanjamo is a very popular character, I've received a lot of feedback from the general public as well.

Q: Can you tell us three things you really like about Nanjamo?
Hondo: I'd say her sharp teeth, her outfit, and the way she's able to make others enjoy themselves while also enjoying herself to the fullest at the same time. I particularly love her outfit, I've been a fan of it ever since I first played the game... When you add the hairstyle to the mix as well, you end up with what I think is the most aggressively idiosyncratic character I've ever seen. When you couple that with the fact that she's a streamer, she's very very Reiwa (laughs). The Coil on her head are really cute too.

Q: Finally, do you have something you want to tell to those who are looking forward to the upcoming episode?

人気アニメ『ポケットモンスター』（テレビ東京系 毎週金曜 後6：55～　※放送日時・内容は地域によって異なる）の第50話（17日放送）にハッコウシティのジムリーダー・ナンジャモが登場し、テラスタル研修・基礎テストに挑戦するドットと対戦する。そこでORICON NEWSは本渡楓にインタビューを実施し、ナンジャモの魅力を聞いてみた。

第50話「映えろテラスタル！ダンス・ダンス・クワッス！！」は、ナンジャモとの基礎テストに臨むことになったドットとクワッス。事前にナンジャモのバトルを研究し、作戦を立てて対策はばっちり…かと思いきや、タイプ相性の悪いハラバリーに苦戦してしまう。さらには予定外のハプニングも発生して…・

――昨年もナンジャモ役でご出演いただいておりますが、今回はジムリーダーとしての登場です。印象で変わったところや、新たに発見した魅力などありますか？
【本渡】　周りを楽しませようとするエンターテイナーなところは、今までと変わらないなと思いましたが、今回はバトルのしかたに発見がありました。バトルを「バトり」と言うみたいな言葉遊びもそうですが、いかに見ている人が盛り上がってくれるかを想像しながら、なおかつ勝てるかというところにも頭が回るキャラクターだなと、演じていて彼女の頭の回転の速さを感じていました。

エンターテイナーとしてやっているので、ドットが相手だとしても寄り添いすぎず、自分が全力で楽しんでいる「バトり」を見てもらって、学んでほしいと思っているのかな、と解釈しました。

――今回はドットが一つ成長するように、先輩として導いてあげるような面も見えましたね。
【本渡】　ドットに対して目の前で話しかけてあげるところでは、「ここは配信者ではなくて一人の人間として、ドットに助言してあげてください」というディレクションを受けました。面倒見がよくて、ドットのことがすごく好きなんだろうな、というナンジャモの人間性が見えました。

――配信者のナンジャモと一人の人間としてのナンジャモの違いはありましたか？
【本渡】　9割近くは配信者として喋っているなと思っていて、その時はすごくエネルギッシュなので、ぜぇぜぇしながら収録しました（笑）。ドットに語りかける時のように人間として喋ることもあるのですが、本当にそれが素なのか、それもまた彼女のエンタメの一部なのかはわからないなと思いました。悪い意味ではなく、底が見えない謎多きキャラクターだなと思っています。

――アフレコで印象に残ったことなどあればお聞きしたいです。
【本渡】　アフレコはハラバリーと一緒に収録したのですが、ポケモン役の声優さんと一緒に録らないと引き出してもらえないところがあるなと実感したので、一緒に収録できてすごくありがたかったです。こちらがバトルの指示出しをした時に、ハラバリーってこんなに応えてくれるんだ、こんなに重量感があるんだ、じゃあもっと指示に距離感持たせてみようかな、とか。もっと寄り添ってお芝居しようという気持ちが生まれました。ハラバリーは本当に愛くるしかったです…。

――ナンジャモ役としてアニポケに出演してから、なにか反響などございましたか？
【本渡】　初めて買ってもらったゲームが『ポケットモンスター リーフグリーン』で、それからゲームは出る度に家族で買ってプレイしていたので、家族はお祭り状態でした（笑）。ナンジャモは自分自身好きなキャラクターのひとりだったので、オファーをいただいた時はとても嬉しかったですし、それを家族に言えたのも嬉しかったです。お仕事頑張ってきてよかったなと思いました。人気なキャラクターなので、家族以外からの反応も多かったですね。

――ナンジャモの好きなところを3つ挙げるとしたら何になりますでしょうか。
【本渡】　ギザギザの歯、服装、エンターテイナーとして全力で、自分も楽しみながら人も楽しませられるところ、の3つですかね。特に服装は、ゲームをプレイしている時から大好きで…。髪型も含めて、個性としてここまで攻めたキャラクターって今までいそうでいなかったなと思って、配信者という立場も相まって令和だなと思いました（笑）。頭についているコイルも可愛いですよね。

――楽しみにしている視聴者の皆さんにひと言いただけますでしょうか。
【本渡】　アフレコの時点で「バトり」にすごく迫力があると感じて、それに負けないように収録したので、とても見ごたえがあると思います！また、バトルだけではなくドットの人間的な成長も描かれているので、そこも注目ポイントになっているんじゃないでしょうか。

　元々エンターテイナーとして全力なナンジャモの、さらに全力のバトルなので、演じるにもエネルギーが必要でしたが、気づいたら私も夢中で楽しくアフレコさせていただきました。皆さんも、ぜひ楽しんで見ていただけると嬉しいです！
