Shueisha invests in Shogakukan, Shogakukan renamed to Shogakukan-Shueisha Prods.

Japanese publisher Shueisha has invested in Shogakukan Prods., the licensing and merchandising subsidiary of Japanese publisher Shogakukan. Shogakukan Prods. (ShoPro) will be renamed Shogakukan-Shueisha Prods. Masao Yagi has been named prexy.

The deal will give "more flexibility in developing titles for the overseas marketplace, including the burgeoning graphic novel and manga market in North America and Europe, and to streamline internal operations," companies said in a joint statement.

Forty-year-old ShoPro handles Shogakukan manga and animated properties including "Pokemon," "Doraemon," "Inuyasha," "Hamtaro," "Detective Conan" and "Megaman.

Shogakukan-Shueisha Prods. will handle properties related to manga from Shogakukan and Shueisha.

Both companies are part-owners of San Francisco-based Viz Media, the animation and licensing company.

"The formation of Shogakukan-Shueisha Prods. by two of our key parent companies will undoubtedly speed the licensing process of future properties for domestic release," said Viz Media CEO Hidemi Fukuhara.

"Our close relationship with both Shueisha and Shogakukan has played a key role in the success of VIZ Media and allows us to continually offer some of the best and most unique manga titles from Japan. We look forward to working with Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions to prepare new properties for release in North America as well as for other emerging markets in Europe and Oceania."

VIZ Media was established in 1986 with seed money from Shogakukan under the name VIZ Communications. Shueisha became an investor in VIZ in 2002, and was a key collaborator on the development of SHONEN JUMP magazine, which is the leading monthly manga anthology in North America. When VIZ and Shogakukan's ShoPro Entertainment merged in 2005, the new company was named VIZ Media.

Both VIZ and Shogakukan release the Pokemon anime and manga. Hopefully we will see a reduction in the time it takes them to prepare and release products outside of Japan with the streamlining of their internal operations.

The track listings and cover art for Crystal Kay's upcoming CD's have been announced. ONE is the title theme for the upcoming Pocket Monsters Movie - Giratina and the Sky's Bouquet: Shaymin which will be in Japanese theaters in July.

For those of you that don't know anything about Crystal Kay, the information below is taken from the Wikipedia entry for her.

Crystal Kay Information

Crystal Kay Williams is a R&B singer. She mainly uses her first two names Crystal Kay as her stage name, although she is known by many fans as "Kuri." Crystal Kay was born to an African American father (a bassist from New Jersey) and a third-generation Zainichi (person of Korean descent born in Japan) mother who was a professional singer. Growing up with musicians as parents influenced Crystal to launch a musical career of her own, which she accomplished with her debut at age 13. Prior to this, she provided voiceover work for a television commercial at the age of six.

Two seperate CD's will be released on July 16th. Both CD's contain the title theme to the movie but the rest of the tracks are different. Like the previously released Kaze no Message CD's, if you want all the tracks, you will have to buy both CD's. Below is a listing of the tracks for both CD's.

Crystal Kay ONE (Regular Version)
1. ONE
2. Suki
3. ONE CORNELIUS REMIX
4. ONE DEXPISTOLS REMIX
5. ONE Instrumental

Crystal Kay ONE Pokemon Edition (Limited Edition)
1. ONE
2. ONE with Pikachu and Shaymin
3. ONE Karaoke

Between July 19th and August 31st, owners of the Japanese version of Pokemon Ranger will be able download a special Shaymin mission. Extra missions are only available by downloading them from Nintendo Wifi Connection on your Nintendo DS. In order to download extra missions, it is necessary that you have completed the game.

"The mission, For the Sake of the Bride and Shaymin!, takes place at a wedding and has the player find and protect Shaymin from Team Yamiyami. " (Bulbanews)

Pokemon Ranger Batonnage is an action-adventure game for the Nintendo DS and the sequel to Pokemon Ranger. It was released in Japan on March 20, 2008. The game is set in a new region called Almia where the base of operations is a Ranger School that the main characters have just graduated from.

Instructions for downloading the extra missions are available on the official Japanese Pokemon website. You can view the instructions by clicking here.

Unlike in the special missions, the Pokemon captured in the extra downloadable missions are subsequently released without allowing them to be transferred to Pokemon Diamond and Pearl.

Model Akina Minami dresses as 'Pikachu' to throw first pitch at baseball game

Pinup model Akina Minami tossed the ceremonial first pitch to open a Japanese interleague baseball game at Jingu Stadium in Tokyo on Sunday while dressed as "Pikachu," the main character from the popular animation series "Pokemon."

"I'm not good at sports, so I practiced throwing the ball with my stylists. I'm glad the ball got to home base," said the 19-year-old Minami with a smile after her successful pitch at the game between the Tokyo Yakult Swallows and the Chiba Lotte Marines.

Minami, who said she occasionally goes to watch baseball games, was embarrassed by not being able to remember the players' names. "Yoshinobu (Takahashi of the Yomiuri Giants) is probably the only baseball player I know," she said.

The first pitch ceremony was held as part a promotional campaign co-hosted by the animation film "Pocket Monsters Diamond Pearl: Giratina and the Sky's Bouquet Shaymin" (Japanese title) that will be released on July 19, in which Minami starred as a voice actress, and the Yakult Swallows. Akira Minami plays the role of Leila in the movie.

Popular "Pokemon" characters will welcome visitors to Yakult Swallow's games at Jingu Stadium until late August. Visitors can also enjoy playing "Pokemon" games at the "Pokemon DP Adventure Park" set up outside the stadium.
