Part 1: The Pokémon Movies Enter a New Dimension! (第１回 ポケモン映画、新次元へ！)
As the new TV anime series started, the movies also received an all-new logo, being retitled "Pokémon the Movie XY" starting with this 17th installment, "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie"!
This is the first time in 3 years we've gone on a location scouting, the last time being for "Victini and the Dark Hero Zekrom/Victini and the Light Hero Reshiram". The country Director Yuyama chose this time was Canada.
There, he would search for the landscapes where Yveltal would sleep, where Xerneas would hide, and Diancie would journey. The location scouting team, Director Yuyama included, boarded a plane and started their 6-days-long journey.
ポケモン映画、新次元へ！ TVアニメ「ポケットモンスター」も新シリーズとなり、映画もロゴを一新して「ポケモン・ザ・ムービー XY」となった、ポケモン映画１７作「破壊の繭とディアンシー」！
ポケモン映画として実に３年ぶり、「ビクティニと黒き英雄 ゼクロム・白き英雄 レシラム」以来となるロケハンを行いました。 湯山監督が今回ロケハンに選んだ国は、カナダ。
イベルタルが眠り、ゼルネアスが潜む景色、ディアンシーが旅する風景を求めて！ 湯山監督をはじめとするロケハンチームは、飛行機に飛び乗り、６日間の長い旅のスタートを切ったのでした。
Part 2: Arrival in the capital, Ottawa (第２回 首都・オタワ到着)
The scouting team first landed in the capital of Canada, Ottawa. They arrived at 2PM Canadian time, and despite being exhausted from their 15 hour flight, immediately set off for their first destination, Confederation Square.
If you continue walking for a while as you look up at the giant monument made from white granite, you will see a humongous, elegant building in Gothic style. This is the Parliament, the symbol of Ottawa.
This whole area is filled with historical buildings like Rideau Hall and the Notre Dame Cathedral Basilica, and the city itself is made up of clean and well-regulated streets.
Since this is also the governmental center of Canada, the atmosphere is a bit stiff and formal, but we got a bit more relaxed when we spotted pieces of tickets to the nearby museum stuck to a traffic light. Our first day in Canada started with some serious atmosphere.
ロケハンチームが、最初に降り立ったのは、カナダの首都オタワ。到着はカナダ時間の午後２時。約15時間のフライトの疲れもなんのその、一行はさっそく、最初のロケ地【コンフェデレーション広場】へ！
この旅の最初のロケ地【コンフェデレーション広場】にある白い御影石でできた大きな記念碑を見上げながらしばらく歩くと、圧倒的な大きさのゴシック様式の優美な建物が見えてきます。オタワのシンボルでもある国会議事堂です。
この地区一帯は、リドーホール、ノートルダム聖堂など古くからの建築物が多く、全体的に、綺麗で整った町並みが形作られています。政治の中心地ということもあり、お固い雰囲気がありながらも、信号機には側にある美術館のチケットの切れ端がベタベタと貼り付けてあるのを見て和んだり。カナダの初日は、そんな雰囲気で始まりました。
Part 3: Setting off Into the Morning Mist (第３回 朝霧の出発)
The second day is when our scouting started for real. We has our breakfast and checked out of our hotel at 7am, and eventually set off at 8. This morning, the entire city was shrouded in thick mist, and we couldn't see anything of the surrounding scenery. Morning mist like this appears to be common in November and December.
The bus carrying our group set off into the mist, following a long, straight road into the mountains. As the mist eventually cleared, a forest filled with trees beautifully colored red, orange and yellow came into view. We were right in the middle of the season for colored leaves.
As we gazed at the red maple leaves, which are also depicted on the Canadian flag, the bus rolled into our first destination for the day; Rideau Canal.
ロケハン2日目。いよいよ本格的なロケハンのスタートです！朝7時にホテルで朝食・チェックアウトを済ませ、8時には出発！ この日の朝は、街全体に深い霧が立ちこめていて景色は何も見えず…。11月から12月にかけてこうして、朝霧が立ち込めるのがよく見られるのだそうです。
霧の中、一行を乗せたバスは長い直線道路を走って山の中へ。次第に霧が晴れてくると、黄色から赤に美しく色づいた森の木々が視界に入ってきました。
ちょうど紅葉のシーズンで、カナダの国旗にもあるメープルリーフが赤く染まるのを見ながら、この日最初の目的地【リドー運河】に到着したのでした。
Part 4: To the Rideau Heritage Route (第４回 リドー歴史街道へ)
Our first destination this second day was Rideau Canal. This is a long canal, roughly 202 km in total, running from the capital Ottawa to the city of Kingston on Lake Ontario. Being that it is the oldest canal in North America, it was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2007.
The entire surrounding area is known as the "Rideau Heritage Route", and old towns dating back to the 19th century, the period when the canal was constructed, can be found throughout the area.
We immediately got off the bus for a walk near the canal, but we got really surprised by how cold it was. We had been told Canadian mornings and evenings are really cold at this time of the year, but still...
2日目最初の目的地は、【リドー運河】。 首都オタワからオンタリオ湖畔の街キングストンまで続く、全長約202kmの長い運河です。北米最古の運河として、2007年に世界遺産に登録されています。
この一帯は、「リドー歴史街道」とよばれ、運河沿いには19世紀の運河建設時代から残る古い街が点在しています。バスを降りてさっそく運河の付近を散策したのですが、とても寒い！
この時期のカナダの朝晩は大変冷え込むとは聞いていましたが…油断していました。
Part 5: The Canal and the Sluices (第5回 運河と水門)
The scouting team take a walk along the side of the Rideau Canal, an area referred to as the "Rideau Heritage Route". Lots of sluices can be found throughout this area; due to the 25 meter height difference between the canal and the Ottawa River that lies beyond it, a complex structure of numerous sluices has been set up to adjust the water level.
A ship was setting off down the canal just as we arrived, and three nearby sluices were just about to open. We also saw the nearby bridge over the canal turn aside. Amazingly enough, there's a mechanism that makes the bridge move when a ship approaches. While this was going on, the bridge got closed to crossing cars for about 10 minutes.
At this time during fall, this scene only occurs once a day at a non-predetermined time, so we were very lucky we got to witness it.
「リドー歴史街道」と呼ばれるリドー運河沿いを散策するロケハンチーム。このリドー運河の周辺には、たくさんの水門が設けられています。 運河とその先を流れるオタワ川には、２５メートルもの高低差があるため、いくつもの水門で水位を調節する複雑な構造になっているのです。
ロケハンチームが見学していると、ちょうどその時間に出発する船があり、付近の3カ所の水門がみるみる開いていきました。そして、運河の上を渡している橋が回転！なんと、船が通れるように、橋が動く仕組みになっているのでした！その間、橋を通りたい車は、踏切でおよそ10分間の通行止め。
この光景は秋のこの時期、1日1回あるかないか、時間も決まっていないということで、とてもラッキーなシーンに出くわしたロケハンチームでした。
Part 6: The Jewel of the Rideau, Merrickville (第6回 リドーの宝石・メリックビル)
The group continued onward to the town of Merrickville, which is known as "the Jewel of the Rideau".
The streets of this town were filled with locations we could use for the movie, with colorful buildings lining the picturesque scenery. Thanksgiving was just around the corner too, leading to the stores having lots of decorations on display. The entire city felt like one big, cute general store.
Director Yuyama and Art Director Akiba went to a local book store and bought reference material, so you'll get to see landscapes resembling this town in the movie.
続いて一行は、「リドーの宝石」とも呼ばれる街【メリックビル】へ。
この街の通りは、映画のロケ地として使われる事も多いそうで、カラフルな建物が建ち並び、どこをとっても絵になるような景色がつづきます。 カナダは、ちょうど感謝祭が間近に控えていて、お店のディスプレイにもさまざまなデコレーションが！まるで街全体がかわいい雑貨屋さんのようでした！
湯山監督と美術監督の秋葉さんは、この街にある本屋で資料を購入されたみたい。映画にも、この街で見たような風景が登場するのでしょうか。
Part 7: The Thousand Islands (第7回 サウザンアイランド)
After eating lunch at an Italian restaurant along the highway, we set off for the Skydeck Tower, where one can get a look down at the Thousand Islands. The Thousand Islands are a group of more than 1500 islands scattered through the Saint Lawrence River downstream from Lake Ontario. The Skydeck Tower lets you look down at them from 400 feet's height (roughly 120 meters).
The elevator ride to the top took 40 seconds, and when the door opened, a beautiful, dream-like 360 degree scenery spread out before us as far as the eye could see. Thin clouds were lingering in the sky as we were there, and Director Yuyama greatly admired the sight.
国道沿いにあるイタリアンで、この日の昼食を済ませた後、続いて【サウザンアイランド】を一望出来るという【スカイデッキ･タワー】へと向かいます。オンタリオ湖からその下流のセントローレンス川にかけて、1500以上の島々が点在するサウザンアイランド。スカイデッキ･タワーでは、その様子を、400フィート（約120メートル）の高さから眺めることが出来ます。
エレベーターで昇ること40秒。扉が開くと、そこには夢のような美しい光景が360度、見渡す限り広がっていました…。この時の雲が薄くたなびいた空を、湯山監督は絶賛されていました。
Part 8: Night Cruising (第8回 ナイトクルージング)
After finishing their scouting for the day, the party checked in at the inn where we would be staying for our second night. Afterwards, we went to Rockport, a landing place for ships. That evening, we enjoyed our dinner while cruising past the same Thousand Islands we had been observing from Skydeck Tower earlier in the day.
An elderly couple were celebrating a birthday aboard the ship we were riding that day, and after everyone had sung a song to their honor, they danced a slow dance cheek to cheek. We were watching the beautiful sunset to the accompaniment of moody, oldie classics sung and played in the background, and as the water surface gradually got lit up by the moonlight, the evening slowly changed into a romantic night.
ロケハンを終え、一行は2日目の宿へチェックイン。その後、船の発着地のロックポートへ。この日の夜は、昼間スカイデッキから眺めた、サウザンアイランドを巡るクルージングを楽しみながらの夕食となりました。
その日、乗り合わせた船には、今日がバースデーの老夫婦がいらっしゃり、皆で歌を歌って祝福したり、その後チークダンスを踊り始めたり。 弾き語りのオールディーズから、ムーディーなナンバーが流れる中、美しい夕景を眺めつつ、次第に水面は月明かりに照らされ、ロマンチックに夜は更けて行きました。
Part 9: To St. Lawrence Market! (第9回 セント・ローレンス・マーケットへ！)
The third day of our location scouting started with a roughly 3 hour long journey to Toronto, the largest city in Canada. As we drove at full speed down the long, long straight road, we left the idyllic countryside behind as an urban landscape of tall buildings came into view.
Our first destination for the day was St. Lawrence Market, a lively market located inside an old stone building that has become one of Toronto's major attractions.
While we were walking around the area, we discovered a Canadian McDonald's. The familiar M sign had a small maple leaf symbolizing Canada drawn right underneath it. We've seen lots of such maple leaves decorating store logos, billboards, etc here in Canada.
ロケハン3日目は、およそ3時間かけてカナダ最大の都市トロントへ向かいます。 長い長い直線道路をひた走ると、のどかな田舎の風景を抜け、高層ビル群が建ち並ぶ都会の景色が見えて来ます。
この日最初の目的地は【セント・ローレンス・マーケット】。 古い石造りの建物の中にある活気に満ちた市場は、トロントの観光スポットの一つになっています。
この近辺を散策している途中、カナダ版・マクドナルドを発見。おなじみのMマークの真ん中に、小さくカナダを象徴するメープルリーフのマークが描かれていました。カナダには、他にもこういったメープルリーフをあしらったお店のロゴや看板などがとても多く見られました。
Part 10: The Launch of "Pocket Monsters X/Y"! (第10回 『ポケットモンスター X・Y』発売！)
Our third day of scouting was also the memorable release day of "Pocket Monsters X/Y"! Since "Pocket Monsters X/Y" was given a worldwide release (*some areas excluded), this was of course also the Canadian release day! Thus, the scouting team went to Toronto Eaton Centre", a giant shopping mall in Toronto, to combine location scouting with shopping! In addition to the game itself, we were also eager to get a "Nintendo 2DS", which is only being sold in a certain markets, like the USA and here in Canada. When we entered the store, "Pocket Monsters X/Y" were almost sold out already, with only a few copies left on the shelves!
Director Yuyama managed to get both a "Nintendo 2DS" and a copy of "Pocket Monsters Y", and the scouting team immediately started playing the game!
ロケハン３日目。
この日は、ご存知『ポケットモンスター X・Y』の発売日でした！ 『ポケットモンスター X・Y』は世界同時発売（※一部地域を除く）ということで、もちろんカナダでも今日が発売日！そこで一行は、トロントにある大型ショッピングモール【トロント・イートン・センター】へ、見学をかねて買い物へ！ゲームソフトはもちろんのこと、米国ほか一部でのみ販売の『ニンテンドー2DS』をゲットしようと意気込みます。店に入ると、『ポケットモンスター X・Y』は、棚にわずか数個を残して売り切れ間近！？
湯山監督は、なんとか『ポケットモンスター Y』と『ニンテンドー2DS』を見事ゲット！
さっそくゲームをプレイし始めるロケハンチームなのでした！
Part 11: Niagara-on-the-Lake and the Clock Tower (第11回 ナイヤガラ・オン・ザ・レイクと時計塔)
The location scouting team were happy they managed to obtain a copy of "Pocket Monsters X/Y" on launch day at the "Toronto Eaton Centre". After eating lunch, it was decided to take a walk through the next scouting location, Niagara-on-the-Lake, to help digest the food.
Niagara-on-the-Lake is located downstream from the famous Niagara Falls, at the shore of Lake Ontario. A clock tower serves as one of the town's landmarks, and there are many other historical buildings dating back to the 19th century to be seen there. The town is also full of luxury villas and hotels as well as fashionable stores and has become a famous tourist spot. It had an atmosphere very reminiscent of Karuizawa.
Since we had learned a very harsh lesson in how cold Canadian mornings and evenings can be, we had dressed up in thick clothes today, but of course, during the middle of the day the sun was burning as hot as if it was summer. The Director spotted a nice hat store while we were walking, and went there to get something to protect himself from the sun, ending up buying himself a stylish knitted indigo blue hunting cap.
【トロント・イートン・センター】でめでたく、発売日に『ポケットモンスター X・Y』を手に入れたロケハンチーム。昼食をとった後は、食後の散歩をかねて、次なるロケ地【ナイヤガラ・オン・ザ・レイク】を散策する事になりました。
有名なナイヤガラの滝の下流、オンタリオ湖のほとりにある【ナイヤガラ・オン・ザ・レイク】。街にはランドマークの時計塔があり、19世紀に建てられた歴史ある建物も多く見ることができます。 また、高級な別荘やホテル、お洒落なお店が建ち並び、有名な観光スポットになって、日本で言うと「軽井沢」のような雰囲気です。
朝晩は大変冷え込むので、前日の教訓を活かして、防寒対策はバッチリして行ったですが、逆に日中照りつける太陽がまるで真夏の様に暑い！
監督は、暑さ対策の為、散策中に見かけたステキな帽子屋さんへ。
そこでインディゴブルーでニット風素材のお洒落なハンチングをお買い求めになっていました。
Part 12: To The Niagara Falls! (第12回 ナイヤガラの滝へ！)
The scouting team stayed their third night at a hotel close to the Niagara Falls. The fourth day, we finally set off to the falls themselves. Unfortunately, it was raining slightly that day, though of course there was little point worrying about that; we had been warned in advance we would end up drenched when visiting the falls anyway.
We started off with a ride on a ship that allowed us to look straight up at the falls from below. The ship was called the Maid of the Mist, and when we boarded it, we were given flashy pink ponchos to wear before the ship set off.
They say 3000 tons of water flows through the Niagara Falls every second, and as we got closer, giant waves sprayed water all over. The ship shook violently, and we were desperately trying to avoid both losing the camera and getting wet while we were collecting footage.
ロケハン3日目、ナイヤガラの滝のすぐそばのホテルに宿泊したロケハンチーム。
4日目はいよいよ、【ナイヤガラの滝】に向かいます。
この日は、小雨が降るあいにくのお天気。
天気を心配していると、濡れるのを気にしてもしかたない、どうせ滝を見学するときにズブ濡れになってしまうとの予告が！
そう！まずはナイヤガラの滝を真下から見上げることが出来るという、船でのツアーに参加します。乗り込む船は、メイド・オブ・ザ・ミスト（霧の乙女号）。配られた派手なピンク色の〝ポンチョ〟を着込んで出発です！
毎秒3000ｔの水量が流れるというナイヤガラの滝！近づくほどに、すさまじい波と水しぶきが！船は激しく揺れ、皆、カメラを落とすまい、濡らすまいと必死で取材を行ったのでした。
Part 13: The Chocolate Store in Stratford (第13回 ストラトフォードのチョコレート屋さん)
After viewing the largest waterfalls in North America, the Niagara, from below, it's time to look at them "from above". From this angle, the intensity of the water looked completely different than when viewed from below and up, and the majestic stream of swiftly falling water made us forget the time for a while. It's the kind of sight you want to gaze at forever.
After our trip to the falls, we set off for Stratford. While the city is primarily known as North American's leading city in the dramatic arts, it's also a gourmet area. While we were walking through the beautiful riverside park while touring the city, we happened upon a cute chocolate store. We were so impressed with it we worked it into one of the characters in the movie, giving him a knack for chocolate.
The physically fit storekeeper recognized as as being Japanese people from Tokyo and explained he was a practitioner of kendo, whose master lived in Tokyo. I guess we fit the stereotype? Lots of us, the director included, bought some cute chocolates from the store as souvenirs.
北米最大の滝、ナイヤガラを真下から見学した後は、今度は〝上から〟見学です。
下から見上げる水の激しさとは違う、とうとうと落ちる雄大な水の流れは、しばし時間を忘れるほど。いつまでも眺めていたくなる光景でした。
滝を見学後、【ストラトフォード】へ向かいます。
北米屈指の演劇の街と謳われているところですが、この辺りはグルメエリアでもあるそう。美しい川縁の公園を歩きながら街の通りを歩くと、偶然にも可愛いチョコレート屋さんを発見。今回の映画の登場人物にも関係があるモチーフでもあり、一同感動でした。
体躯のいい店主は我々が「東京から来た日本人」とわかると、「自分は剣道をしていて、その師範が東京に居る」と教えてくれました。ますますイメージ通り？ 監督をはじめロケハンチームの何人かも、このお店の可愛いチョコレートをお土産に買っていました。
Part 14: To the Forests of Flowerpot Island (第14回 フラワーポット・アイランド・森へ)
After checking out of our hotel the fifth day, we went by foot to the port in Tobermory. We were starting today's scouting with a trip around the Bruce Peninsula and the surrounding areas.
We set out on Lake Huron, one of the Great Lakes, by motorboat, commenting on how beautiful the crystal clear the water was. On our way, we got to look down at a ship that had sunk at the end of the 19th century. Eventually we arrived at our destination, Flowerpot Island, which is located in Georgian Bay at the northeastern part of the lake. The island is named after two thin rock formations, one big and one small, shaped by nature to what resembles tulips.
Director Yuyama didn't come to the island for these formations, however, but for its expansive forest. This forest was perfect to base the "Alearth Woods" in the movie on. We got an exceptionally large amount of material for the movie this day.
ロケハン5日目。
チェックアウトを済ませ、ホテルから徒歩でトバモリーの港まで。
ブルース半島をめぐる、この日のロケハンがスタートです。
綺麗に透き通った水をたたえる、五大湖のひとつヒューロン湖を、モーターボートで進みます。途中、19世紀末に沈んだ沈没船を水面下に眺めながら、目的の島へ。 湖の北東部、ジョージア湾に浮かぶ【フラワーポット・アイランド】には、フラワーポットと名付けられた根元が細く削られたチューリップの様な形の奇岩が大・小二つあり、名前の由来となっています。
しかし、湯山監督の目的はむしろそれではなく、この島に広がる樹海。
その様子が今回の映画の舞台となる、「オルアースの森」のイメージにピッタリだったとのこと。ひときわ大きな収穫になった一日でした。
Part 15: The Land of Canada (第15回 カナダの大地)
We spent the rest of our 5th day in Canada on the long trip back to Toronto. And thus the 6th day started.
We welcomed this final scouting day with a trip to Habourfront, a harbor neighborhood facing Lake Ontario. The air was cold, like a winter morning, and we headed for CN Tower while casting sideway glances at the seagulls flying in the air. The CN Tower is one of the tallest free-standing towers in the world, second only to Canton Tower in China and our own Tokyo Skytree.
From the observation deck we could look out over Toronto, practically giving us a view of our entire location scouting journey. The land of Canada spread far out in the distance.
ロケハン5日目の後半は、再びトロントまで戻る長い移動となりました。
そして、ロケハン6日目。
今回の旅は、オンタリオ湖に面した港湾地区【ハーバーフロント】で最終日を迎えました。まるで冬の朝の様な冷たい空気の中、飛び交うカモメを横目に【CNタワー】へと向かいます。CNタワーは自立型建築物としては、中国の広州塔、東京スカイツリーに次ぐ高い塔。
タワーの展望台からの眺めは、トロントの街を一望でき、まるで今回のロケハンの旅を見晴るかすよう。遠くどこまでも、カナダの大地が広がっているのでした。
Final Part: The End of the Journey (最終回 旅の終わりに)
We're finally getting close to the premiere of "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie"/"Pikachu, What Kind of Keys are These?". The location scouting for the movies took place in October 2013. While we were on this trip, "Pocket Monsters X/Y" were released and the new anime TV series "Pocket Monsters XY" started.
We'll see how we managed to capture the essence of the landscapes we saw and the atmosphere we felt on our journey in this first movie set in the new region. If you keep the various parts of this scouting report in mind while you watch the movie, it just might increase your enjoyment of it.
Summer means Pokémon! The summer of Pokémon is just about to start! "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie"/"Pikachu, What Kind of Keys are These?" premieres Saturday July 19th!
いよいよ、「破壊の繭とディアンシー」「ピカチュウ、これなんのカギ？」の公開が近づいてきました。ロケハンを行ったのが、2013年の10月。
このロケハンの間に「ポケットモンスター X・Y」が発売され、テレビアニメも新シリーズ「ポケットモンスター XY」がスタートとなりました。
新たな舞台となって最初の映画に、この旅を通して見た風景や感じた空気がどのようなエッセンスとなってあらわれるのでしょうか。
ロケハンレポートでのエピソードも、ちょっとだけ、頭の片隅に置いて映画を観ると、より映画が楽しめるかも知れません。
夏はポケモン！ポケモンの夏がはじまります。
「破壊の繭とディアンシー」「ピカチュウ、これなんのカギ？」は、7月19日（土）公開です！
