For June 2022’s Pokémon GO Dev Diary, Pokémon GO product manager Mikey talked about the newest set of social features that will make coordinating activities in Pokémon GO easier than ever before by using the Campfire app.

Image

Dev Diaries: Introducing Campfire!

Trainers,
For June’s Dev Diary, we interviewed a member of our staff who worked on our newest set of social features that will make coordinating activities in Pokémon GO easier than ever before!

Read Mikey’s thoughts on how we designed these new features, how they’ll enhance in-person gameplay, and how Campfire will be implemented in Pokémon GO, now and in the future.

Introducing Mikey, Pokémon GO product manager

Hi, Trainers! I’m Mikey, a product manager for social features in Pokémon GO. Like many of you, I started playing Pokémon GO back in 2016. That summer, scurrying around the streets of New York City and seeking out Pokémon with my friends, I felt like I was experiencing something brand new—something that I’d never experienced in over 20 years of playing video games.

All these years later, it’s been a thrill to end up at Niantic and work on something that feels just as special: Campfire! We can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on.

How Campfire will help you meet your local community

When we were thinking of ways to make Pokémon GO better, we reflected on what makes the Pokémon GO experience special. The themes that came up again and again were that Pokémon GO helps Trainers befriend people who share common interests and explore the world around them. We wanted to design something that made those experiences even more meaningful, and with these new social features, we hope to have done just that.

If you’re on vacation somewhere—or even just exploring new areas near you—using Campfire is a fun and unique way to shape your own adventure and meet new friends. Once you’ve met up with other Trainers, you can send them a Friend Request and even direct message them to coordinate your next meetup.

Community, exploration, and real-world interaction shape the Pokémon GO experience, and we think these new features will make those connections even stronger and easier to maintain.

The Campfire experience in Pokémon GO

Trainers want to quickly and easily coordinate with their friends while playing Pokémon GO. To maximize the usefulness of Campfire’s social features, we integrated certain features within Pokémon GO itself.

From Pokémon GO’s in-game map, just tap the Campfire icon and you’ll see where other Trainers have lit Flares—think of Flares as beacons, real-time markers that direct attention to a particular location—which will help you identify where to meet up with other Trainers. This will make coordinating raids and meeting up with your fellow Trainers much easier.

And, in a future update, one of my favorite Campfire features will be available in Pokémon GO: on the in-game map, alongside Flares and Gyms and all that other fun stuff, you’ll also be able to see pictures of Pokémon caught by other Trainers! These photos will exist on the map right where that Pokémon was caught. So if you’re searching for a specific Pokémon, these photos are a great way to decide where to go next!

One of my favorite memories of Pokémon GO is hearing a friend shout that they’d found a Dratini nearby, inspiring the rest of us to run over and try to catch one, too. We hope this photo-sharing feature will create many more thrilling experiences like that for Trainers!

What’s in the Campfire app?

For us, the most important thing when designing these features was how we could enhance the collaborative aspect of each Trainer’s Pokémon GO experience. With this in mind, we made accessing Campfire’s features within Pokémon GO quick and easy—but for a more involved experience, Trainers can also use the Campfire app itself.

We know Trainers love taking part in raids, so we designed Campfire specifically to make this aspect of Pokémon GO easier to coordinate. Inside the Campfire app, Trainers can share raid locations with friends in direct messages or group chats, making it easy to get a team together quickly and efficiently.

And for those of you who typically play on your own—don’t worry! When you tap a Gym on the map, you’ll see the option to add a Flare to that location, which can encourage other Trainers to come by and join you.

We’re still hard at work integrating the Campfire experience within Pokémon GO, so we hope to roll out more features in the future. Pokémon GO is such a special, unique game, and we can’t wait to see how Trainers use Campfire to catch more Pokémon, take on more raids, and make more friends!

Happy sixth anniversary, Pokémon GO!

Trainers,
Today marks a very special day—it’s the sixth anniversary of Pokémon GO! What an adventure it’s been!

Whether it encourages you to hike through mountains, discover new landmarks right in your backyard, or catch, trade, and battle Pokémon with friends, Pokémon GO continues to bring Trainers together in new and unexpected ways, all while highlighting the friendship and bonds we can make with each other—and with Pokémon!

Things aren’t going to slow down in our sixth year, either. We’ve got an Anniversary Event right around the corner to mark the occasion, and Pokémon like Charizard and Pikachu are dressed up and ready to celebrate!

If you’re looking for a place to celebrate in-person, look no further than Pokémon GO Fest: Seattle and Pokémon GO Fest: Sapporo! Tickets for both events are still available. Stay tuned for more details on the global Finale event that will take place on August 27!

We’re also excited to share a new piece of anniversary art! This year’s anniversary art is drawn by Yusuke Kozaki (@kymg on Twitter), who is also in charge of character design for Pokémon GO.

We can’t wait to see what the sixth year of Pokémon GO has in store for all of us. Let’s GO!

Bonuses for groups

If enough Pokémon are caught by Trainers with help from a single Lure Module, the 3× XP bonus for catching Pokémon near the Lured PokéStop will be increased to a 4× bonus XP for 30 minutes.*

* This bonus will not stack with the base 3× Catch XP bonus and will instead replace it for the duration.

Bonus Raid Battles after Community Day

Sunday, July 17, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time

After the three-hour Community Day event ends, Trainers will be able to challenge unique four-star Raid Battles. Claiming victory in one of these raids will cause more Starly to appear around the Gym that hosted the raid for 30 minutes!

Please note that the Community Day bonuses listed above in the “Event bonuses” and “Bonuses for groups” sections only apply to the three-hour Community Day event period.

Four-star Raid Battles

Staravia will be appearing in four-star raids! These Raids can only be accessed with Raid Passes and Premium Battle Passes. Remote Raid Passes cannot be used.

Once you defeat Staravia in a four-star Raid Battle, Starly will begin to appear in a 300-meter radius around the Gym that hosted the raid for 30 minutes. If you’re lucky, you may encounter a Shiny one!*

* Starly that appear under these circumstances will have the same chance of appearing as a Shiny Pokémon as those that appear during July Community Day’s three-hour event period.

Niantic has announced that new enforcement of their player guidelines and terms of service is coming to all Niantic games including Pokémon GO. It is likely that they will be targeting players that are location spoofing.

Image PLAYER WARNING: Image

Niantic has increased the price of Remote Raid Passes, restricted Four-star Raid Battles to Raid Passes and Premium Battle Passes only and made players using Remote Raid Passes and Incense less effective. If there are dangerous storms, health restrictions or other reasons that would endanger you playing Pokémon GO for a time limited event, please do not force yourself to venture out to participate in that event. Damage to devices may also occur in extreme heat and cold weather conditions.

An Update on Niantic’s Gameplay Policy Enforcement

We want to start this note by thanking you, our players, for your patience and understanding as we continuously work to facilitate a fun and fair environment for everyone. We've heard your feedback and feel your frustration about how cheating behaviors negatively impact your gameplay experience.

It has been a little while since our most recent update from the beginning of 2021 on our efforts to prevent cheating in our games and we wanted to share what we have been working on.

Our last post was focused primarily on sharing a broad overview of the actions we had taken to punish accounts we found to be cheating in multiple Niantic games. Since then, we’ve invested in becoming better at observing cheating behaviors, and can now more reliably pinpoint these activities with higher speed and accuracy, preventing legitimate players from being punished incorrectly.

As a result, we will be ramping up enforcement against these behaviors across our games, and rolling out our improved approach to anti-cheat. We are starting now by taking action against a number of accounts who we found to be in violation of our terms of service or player guidelines during recent in-game events in Pokémon GO.

This is only the first step in implementing our improved cheating behavior detection and enforcement systems. These improvements will be integrated into all Niantic games to detect and punish players on a consistent and ongoing basis, rather than in waves, as we have in the past.

Looking ahead, we’ll continue to improve our methods and processes to ensure we’re staying ahead of any new behaviors that allow players to unfairly exploit game rules.

Please only use the official versions of our games available on the Google Play Store, Apple App Store and Samsung Galaxy Store; and note that we do not support jailbroken or rooted devices or third-party apps.

Niantic Player Guidelines - As of June 22nd, 2022

We want our games to be a fun and safe experience for all players and for everyone out in the real world where the game is played. Following these guidelines will help ensure you and other players have a great experience. Note that violations can result in the permanent suspension of your account. In short, treat others as you would like to be treated. Remember that certain interactions that seem harmless or fun to you may be perceived differently by bystanders or other players.

If you are around other players who are violating these guidelines, please remove yourself from the situation and don’t engage. Report the situation to us through the in-app support options or through our web-based help centers.

Below are some guidelines to keep in mind:

1 - Treat others with respect

Unlike many other games, you may actually meet the people you play with in real life. It’s in everyone’s best interest to keep things courteous and fun for all. Respect other players and other people, both in the game and in the real world.

Here are a few principles of respect to keep in mind:

  • Never defame, abuse, harass, harm, stalk, or threaten another player.
  • Never violate the legal rights (including the rights of privacy and publicity) of others.
  • Never impersonate other players or Niantic staff.
  • Never take photos or videos of other players unless you have their explicit permission.
  • Never expose players’ identities without their consent (“dox”). This includes any information about another user’s identity, including their name, phone number, email address or physical address, even if a player discloses that info first.

2 - Stay aware of your surroundings and adhere to the rules of the human world

Our games are designed to be played outdoors. As with any outdoor activity like hiking, biking, or playing sports in a park, we encourage everyone to exercise caution and play safely. Here are some additional considerations as you traverse the real world:

  • Remain aware of your environment and avoid going into any inappropriate or dangerous areas, or any area where you are not permitted to be. Do not trespass.
  • When walking, players should remain aware of hazards, including other pedestrians, traffic, and obstacles.
  • As with any mobile app, our games should not be operated while driving a vehicle.
  • For our games that allow children to play: parents should guide and supervise their children’s use of the product, including where to play and how to use a mobile phone app safely.

3 - Avoid inappropriate content

We may review the content you create within our products, particularly if another player has flagged it, and we may remove it if we believe it’s inappropriate.

Inappropriate content may include:

  • sexual or pornographic content,
  • obscenities or derogatory content,
  • content that promotes illegal activity,
  • hate speech or content that promotes hatred against members of a protected group,
  • content posted with the intent to abuse or harass another player,
  • or spam.
  • Each game has an intended age rating which you can find in the App Store or Google Play Store listing. Keep this age rating in mind when sharing content and use discretion when interacting with others.

4 - No cheating

Don’t do it. Play fair. Our games are meant to be played on mobile devices and get you outside to have adventures in the real world. Don’t deny yourself or someone else of an authentic gameplay experience by cheating.

Unfortunately, methods of cheating are limited only by cheaters’ imaginations, and include the following:

  • using modified or unofficial software,
  • playing with multiple accounts (one account per player),
  • using tools or techniques to alter or falsify your location (“spoofing”),
  • sharing accounts,
  • intentionally exploiting a bug to gain reward,
  • abusing refund policy and mechanism,
  • buying or selling in-game currency or items on third-party platforms,
  • buying/selling/trading accounts,
  • or any other activity that is in violation of Niantic’s Terms of Service, available here: https://nianticlabs.com/terms/

How we enforce the Terms of Service and these guidelines.

We will review reported or flagged player accounts and content and will determine whether or not they violate the Terms of Service and/or these guidelines. Accounts are penalized for violations of the Terms of Service and/or these guidelines. We may issue a warning, degrade your gameplay experience, suspend your account, or permanently terminate your account without warning.
