Niantic has announced that they will be Powering up PokéStops to receive better rewards and create new AR experiences for Trainers worldwide.
Power up PokéStops to receive better rewards and create new AR experiences
Trainers, We’re excited to announce Powered-Up PokéStops, a feature that will make new use of the AR Mapping tasks we introduced last year. Soon, you’ll be able to work with your fellow Trainers to complete AR Mapping tasks and create exciting new AR experiences for Trainers worldwide, simply by using your smart device to scan real-world PokéStop locations.
You’ll be able to power up certain PokéStops and Gyms for a limited period of time by completing AR Mapping tasks. Powered-Up PokéStops will look different on the map, and any Trainer who spins one will earn extra rewards. As more Trainers level 20 and above perform AR scans of a PokéStop, the rewards for spinning it will increase, and the PokéStop will be powered up for a longer period of time. Powered-Up PokéStops will have three visually distinct levels, and they’ll level up as more Trainers work together to scan the PokéStop. The scanning requirements to achieve each level are as follows.
Level 1: Five scans
Level 2: 10 scans
Level 3: 25 scans
To scan a PokéStop, go to the PokéStop or Gym’s details page and tap the three dots in the upper right. You must be level 20 or above to complete AR Mapping tasks.
Tap SCAN POKÉSTOP.
Opt in to the feature via the on-screen prompts if it’s your first time performing a scan.
Tap the record button to start scanning. Keep the subject within the frame, and slowly walk around the subject if possible.
Tap Upload Later or Upload Now to upload your scan.
Learn more about Powered-Up PokéStops, including the rewards they offer and the duration of time they’ll remain powered up at each level, in this help center article.
Curious about how to submit PokéStop AR scans ? We’ve put together a tutorial video that can be found here.

The Season of Heritage will run from Wednesday, December 1, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. to Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. local time.
After witnessing the power Hoopa was able to unleash during the Season of Mischief, Professor Willow has become intrigued by what other mysterious powers may be lying dormant in the world. His research brings him to a historical cave site, where he stumbles upon a large door bearing a set of strange unlocking mechanisms. How does it open? What lies beyond? Your research this Season will see you collaborating with both Professor Willow and the Team Leaders to help uncover this historic site’s mysteries.
Along the way, we’ll explore the past for answers that will guide us into the future as we make our way toward Pokémon GO Tour: Johto.

While visiting a historical cave site, I discovered a giant door equipped with a set of strange unlocking mechanisms! The team leaders and I have some hypotheses as to how to unlock it, but we’re still unsure as to what may lie beyond. Pretty exciting, wouldn’t you say?
Let’s explore this relic from the past as we ponder our own heritages! I have a feeling we’ll learn much more about this particular location over the coming months as we seek to solve these mysteries together. What can we learn from the histories of places, Pokémon, and even our fellow Trainers that will shed light on our future? Let’s GO find out!

12/5: Swinub Incense Day
Sunday, December 5, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time
Professor Willow recruits Blanche to help investigate the mysterious door’s mechanisms. After some analysis of the faded symbols adorning the door, Blanche determines that the first of the door’s mechanisms requires Stardust and the help of Ice- and Ground-type Pokémon to activate.
In order to continue their research on the door, Professor Willow and Blanche begin to modify Incense to specifically attract Ice- and Ground-type Pokémon like Swinub for a short period of time.
“According to my analysis of the door’s components, this should do the trick.”
Monthly Seasonal Bonuses and Timed Research
A different Seasonal Bonus will be featured every month during the Season of Heritage.
In addition, Timed Research will be available every month and will reward Trainers with exclusive avatar items. December’s Timed Research will be available to all Trainers, while the Timed Research in January and February will be available to those who pre-purchase a ticket for Pokémon GO Tour: Johto.
