Niantic has announced that the Safari Zone St. Louis which was scheduled to be held from Friday, March 27th, 2020 to Sunday, March 29th, 2020 has been canceled due to the COVID-19 situation. Our list of COVID-19 canceled Pokémon Events has been updated with this announcement.

Niantic Live Events Update - March 2020

Niantic Explorers, We have been monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely, especially as it pertains to our Niantic live events around the world. While we prefer never to postpone or cancel events, player health and safety are our top priorities. We also understand that many people have been planning for and looking forward to these events for a long time.

Given the varying degrees of impact and risk from location to location, there is no one-size-fits-all solution across our live events. We are watching risk level assessments for each country from global health experts and working closely with local government agencies to determine whether or not to move forward with each individual event. As of now, the following modifications will be made:

Pokémon GO

We have made the difficult decision to postpone Safari Zone St. Louis. We are looking into alternate dates within the next 12 months and will provide an update as soon as possible.

We will refund the amount paid by Trainers if they request a refund of their tickets via in-app support. Deadline to request a refund is March 25, 2020 at 11:59pm PT. If you do not request a refund, you will be able to use your existing ticket for the rescheduled Safari Zone.

As an added bonus for those who retain their tickets, we will activate the Safari Zone Pokémon encounters and Special Research globally during the original scheduled event hours (in your local time zone) so that you can still enjoy the event from wherever you are in the world. Only ticket holders will be able to experience this bonus event.

No action is required to keep your ticket and participate in the global gameplay. We will email ticket order purchasers with the updated event information and next steps.

The next two Safari Zones (Liverpool and Philadelphia) are still scheduled to occur as originally planned. However, we will reassess the situation in early April, so stay tuned on this blog for updates.

As a reminder, regular gameplay and most in-game events can still be enjoyed by Trainers around the world. The experience may vary for players in areas with higher risk of COVID-19.

Additionally, Legendary Raid encounters have been added to GO Battle League, to give Trainers extra opportunities to catch Pokémon that would otherwise be exclusive to Raid Battles.

  • Reach rank 10 to earn avatar items and an avatar pose inspired by Steven. Steven is a Pokémon League Champion in the Hoenn region. Niantic has announced that Team GO Rocket is making Shadow Pokémon stronger in Pokémon GO as long as they remain Shadow Pokémon.

Team GO Rocket is making Shadow Pokémon stronger!

Trainers, We’ve received reports of developments regarding Shadow Pokémon. Whatever Team GO Rocket is doing seems to be making these poor Pokémon stronger as long as they remain Shadow Pokémon. Details are as follows.

  • Shadow Pokémon now deal more damage with their Fast and Charged Attacks, but they also take more damage when attacked.
  • Powering up a Shadow Pokémon and teaching a Shadow Pokémon an additional Charged Attack now cost less Stardust and Candy.
  • Legendary Shadow Pokémon that you save from Giovanni are now more powerful.
During certain time periods, Shadow Pokémon might be able to forget the Charged Attack Frustration by learning a different Charged Attack with a Charged TM, though we haven’t figured out when that’ll be possible. Please stay tuned for more details. Despite our efforts, Team GO Rocket is growing stronger and acquiring even more resources. We’re not sure how they’re doing this, but please know that we’re investigating how to fight back against these ruffians. Let’s stay strong, Trainers!

A Team GO Rocket global take-over is imminent!
Odd things are afoot, Trainers. The professor and team leaders have been following Team GO Rocket’s movements and noticed that they’re planning something big. We don’t know all Team GO Rocket’s plans yet, but we do have the following details to share.

  • From Friday, March 6, 2020, at 8:00 a.m. to Monday, March 9, 2020, at 10:00 p.m. local time
  • Poison- and Dark-type Pokémon will be appearing more often in the wild, as well as other Pokémon that are related to Team GO Rocket.
  • We have reports that Absol is one of the Pokémon that will be appearing in the wild!
  • Regardless of how you come across it, any Skorupi you find could be Shiny—if you’re lucky!
  • On Saturday, March 7, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time
    • We have word that another Team GO Rocket global take-over will happen! Team GO Rocket Grunts will be making a push to seize even more PokéStops. Sierra, Cliff, Arlo, and even Giovanni himself will also be more active, so you might run into them more easily if you keep your Rocket Radar or Super Rocket Radar equipped.
  • We’ve noticed that Shadow Pokémon rescued from the Team GO Rocket Leaders have had a chance of being Shiny. While the Team GO Rocket Leaders have switched up their teams since they first appeared, during this take-over, you’ll be able to rescue all six of the Shadow Pokémon that Trainers have seen left behind by the Team GO Rocket Leaders.
  • During the take-over, you’ll be able to use a Charged TM to change a Shadow Pokémon’s exclusive attack, Frustration, to other Charged Attacks that that Pokémon can learn normally. Please note that if you purify the Shadow Pokémon afterward, it will still learn Return, replacing the attack learned via the Charged TM.
  • Defeating Team GO Rocket Grunts and Leaders will earn you twice the usual Stardust.
  • Turn on your in-game music—the Team GO Rocket music will be playing!

The Psychic Spectacular returns with new faces

  • More Psychic-type Pokémon first discovered in Unova will make their Pokémon GO debut! During the daytime, you’ll be able to encounter Solosis, the Cell Pokémon, in the wild, and during the evening, you’ll instead encounter Gothita, the Fixation Pokémon! Solosis and Gothita will be available after the event in the wild and in 5 km Eggs.
  • The following Psychic-type Pokémon will be hatching more often from 2 km Eggs: Abra, Drowzee, Ralts, Spoink, Baltoy, Wynaut, Beldum, Gothita, and Solosis.

With the City Explorer Pass, you’ll be able to take part in City Explorer Raids, hatch Eggs faster throughout Philadelphia, and access other exclusive bonuses for the full event weekend. City Explorers will enjoy the following benefits.

  • 10 City Explorer Raids on a 72-hour timer will take place at iconic city locations that will be chosen in partnership with the City of Philadelphia. These raids will be accessible only by City Explorers. With varying levels of difficulty and a wide variety of Pokémon to battle, these raids will offer challenges that City Explorers of all levels can enjoy! Access to these raids will be included in the City Explorer Pass—no Premium Battle Passes needed.
    • Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres will be available in three five-star City Explorer Raids.
    • Braviary, the Evolution of Safari Zone Philadelphia’s featured Pokémon Rufflet, will be available in a two-star raid.

    • The other four City Explorer Raids will feature one Raid Battle each from each level of difficulty from one star to four star.
  • 1/2 Hatch Distance when Eggs are placed into Incubators within the city.
  • Exclusive Field Research tasks will be granted by PokéStops throughout the city.
  • Regular Lure Modules will last four hours if placed by City Explorers within the city. All Trainers will benefit from those four-hour Lure Modules, not just City Explorers.
  • One-hour Incense duration within the city.

The City Explorer Pass gameplay experience will last the full weekend, from Friday, May 8, at 6:00 a.m. to Sunday, May 10, at 10:00 p.m. EDT. We know that Trainers come to our Safari Zones from all over to experience a special one-day Pokémon GO live event. By offering an additional experience that spans the entire weekend, we hope that City Explorers and their friends can embark on even more adventures throughout the host city. We’re excited to bring Pokémon GO adventures to the whole area and to explore the city together!

Be sure to make plans early to ensure you obtain transportation and accommodations for the event. We’re super excited for even more events coming up in 2020 and look forward to sharing more details soon. We can’t wait to see you, Trainers!
