Gilbert's Bulbasaur was one of the three starter Pokémon that ran away from Professor Oak's lab the day that Ash's Tauros ran through the lab and left a hole in the side of the wall. Bulbasaur was scared and ran away. It started appearing in various places throughout Pallet Town and finally Professor Oak and crew found it in a tree above a bunch of angry Primeape. Ash's Bulbasaur came to its rescue and Gilbert chose it as his starter Pokémon.
