Nintendo President Satoru Iwata simultaneously broadcasted worldwide a Nintendo Direct broadcast where he announced Pokémon X and Y (ポケットモンスター X・Y). The games will be released worldwide in October of 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS. The names mark the end of the color naming scheme that have been used on all the main handheld games since the series was first released. This also marks the first time that the games have launched worldwide but it appears that Korea will not be part of the worldwide release as Mr. Iwata did not list it and the on screen caption indicated some countries would not be part of the worldwide release. Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 was just released in Korea on November 8th, 2012. Nintendo 3DS features will be incorporated into the games and the teams are currently still working on the games.
Mr. Iwata noted that a significant number of resources is required to localize the games to each countries language and their challenge has always been how to distribute the Pokémon games around the world at the same time while ensuring that the quality remains high. With the release of Pokémon X and Y, they have been able to overcome this challenge.
Pokémon X and Pokémon Y marks the start of the 6th Generation and a lot of new Pokémon will be announced. The new starters were announced during the Nintendo Direct and what looks like 2 new legendary Pokémon were also revealed. The starters are as follows: Water-type Froakkie, Grass-type Chespin and the Fire-type Fennekin.
BELLEVUE, Wash., Jan 08, 2013 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Pokemon Company and Nintendo announced today that the next generation of Pokemon video games, Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, will launch worldwide in October exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS system. New Pokemon, a new storyline set in a spectacular 3D world, and dynamic battles instantly make Pokemon X and Pokemon Y two of the most highly anticipated video game titles of 2013.
"The worldwide launch of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y this October allows players to begin their adventures at the same time," said Tsunekazu Ishihara, CEO of The Pokemon Company. "Now, Pokemon fans across the globe can discover the secrets of Pokemon games and can collect, battle, and trade with each other immediately."
"We brought Pokemon into an entirely new dimension and we're incredibly excited to bring Pokemon X and Pokemon Y to fans," said Junichi Masuda, video game director at GAME FREAK inc. "The stunning visuals, a completely redesigned environment, game scenario, music, and communication features will bring smiles to the faces of video game players around the world."

Pokemon X and Pokemon Y will be the blueprint for an exciting array of new animation, Pokemon TCG, and toys debuting around the world.
The official Nintendo of Japan and Nintendo UK sites and the Nintendo of America twitter have posted further details on the January 8th announcement. A special version of the Nintendo Direct presentation, called Pokémon Direct, will be hosted by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata and simultaneously broadcast worldwide at 8pm JST, 6am EST and 11am GMT. We'll update the site with the latest information as it's revealed.
Pokemon X and Pokemon Y for the Nintendo 3DS confirmed.
The official Japanese Pokémon website has revealed that there will be a major announcement on Tuesday, January 8th, 2013. A Black 2 White 2 ad airing on Kids Station and other television stations in Japan has been broadcasting a notice at the end of the commercial indicating the same announcement date. The webpage tells people to bookmark it and not to forget to check out the page on that day.
Shigeki Morimoto is scheduled to appear once again on Smash 117 which airs on January 6th, 2013 according to Junichi Masuda's Twitter feed. Contrary to what many Pokémon fansites and news outlets are speculating about his appearance, this is a scheduled appearance as the last time he was on Smash was for the 4th Smash tournament as a judge and spectator.
Both will Shigeki Morimoto (森本茂樹) and Junichi Masuda (増田順一) be taking a similar role in this episode as they did in the previous episode. Despite there being a large announcement on January 8th, 2013, it is VERY unlikely that Masuda or Morimoto will announce anything on Smash 117 as most of the live action part of the episode will be filled with the tournament like last time. There is even more participants in this 5th tournament than in the 4th tournament, so they will already be stretched for time.
It is also VERY unlikely that The Pokémon Company would trump their own announcement by two days. Whatever the announcement is, Smash will cover it in their Marketing Department segment sometime mid to late January 2013.

In response to the release of Pokémon Black Version 2 and Pokémon White Version 2 over the weekend in North America, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) released a game and statement condemning the Pokémon franchise.
Below is the game that Peta posted. Note: Warning unlike the real Pokémon games, this Pokémon game by Peta is not suitable for all ages. Parental discretion is highly advised.
Peta's Position
"For generations, Pokémon have suffered at the hands of their cruel trainers. Help Peta free Pikachu and his Pokémon friends as they struggle for Pokémon liberation!
The amount of time that Pokémon spend stuffed in pokéballs is akin to how elephants are chained up in train carts, waiting to be let out to "perform" in circuses. But the difference between real life and this fictional world full of organized animal fighting is that Pokémon games paint rosy pictures of things that are actually horrible. If PETA existed in Unova, our motto would be: Pokémon are not ours to use or abuse. They exist for their own reasons. We believe that this is the message that should be sent to children."
