Road to Worlds Travels Through More Than 30 Pokémon National Championships Events

Pokémon Video Game and Trading Card Game Competitors across the Globe Battle for a Place in the 2014 Pokémon World Championships in Washington, DC - London, UK—April 2, 2014—The road to the 2014 Pokémon World Championships heats up as more than 30 countries across the globe are set to host Pokémon National Championships over the next few months. These national tournaments provide Pokémon X and Pokémon Y video game players and Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) players an opportunity to earn an invitation to the most prestigious Pokémon event of the year: the 11th annual Pokémon World Championships, held August 16–17, 2014, in Washington, DC.

“Our vibrant Pokémon community loves a good Pokémon battle,” said J.C. Smith, director of Consumer Marketing, The Pokémon Company International. “The Pokémon National Championships will bring out the best players and biggest fans in each country.”

Three European cities will host the 2014 Pokémon European National Championships, featuring both Pokémon video game and TCG tournaments. The video game tournaments are open to all Europeans, while the Pokémon TCG tournaments are open to citizens of the host countries.

  • 2014 Pokémon German National Championships: May 3–4, 2014, in Bochum, Germany
  • 2014 Pokémon UK National Championships: May 24–25, 2014, in Manchester, UK
  • 2014 Pokémon Italian National Championships: May 31–June 1, 2014, in Milan, Italy
Indianapolis, Indiana, will host the US 2014 National Championships on July 4–6. More than 2,000 Pokémon video game and TCG players from across the country are expected to compete at the open event. Canadian video game players are also eligible to compete at the US National Championships, while the Pokémon TCG Canadian National Championships begins June 28, 2014, in Kitchener, Ontario.

Additional Pokémon National Championships will be held in Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe, North America, and South America. Top finishers will move on to the 2014 Pokémon World Championships held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC.
The Pokémon Company International is looking for citizens of the United States to become commentators for the upcoming 2014 Pokémon US National Championships and the Pokémon World Championships. The full details and instructions on how to apply are listed below.

Pokémon Commentator Auditions - PR E-mail

The Pokémon Company International is looking for talented and knowledgeable Pokémon fans to lead live commentary at the 2014 Pokémon US National Championships and the Pokémon World Championships. Chosen commentators will be making an appearance on-screen at the events, which will be streamed live to thousands of Pokémon fans around the world, and will have their travel and hotel costs covered by The Pokémon Company International.

Auditions are open to US residents who are at least 18 years old and who can attend both the US National Championships, July 4-6 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and the World Championships, August 15-17 in Washington, D.C.

To be considered, entrants must submit an audition video where they commentate solo or with a partner on a Pokémon X, Pokémon Y, or Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) match. The recorded video must then be posted to YouTube with the title "Play! Pokémon Commentary Audition: [YOUR NAME]". Once the video is posted, entrants need to email [email protected] with the following information:

Nintendo UK has announced that they are searching for the very best Pokémon Experts and newcomers to participate in the Pokémon X and Pokémon Y Battle Tournament 2014. Tournament consists of 4 different categories: Ultimate Pokémon Expert, Junior Pokémon Expert, Pokémon Apprentice and Ultimate Pokémon Team.

Regional Heats

The Regional Heats are single elimination knock-out for each tournament category. All tournament rules adhere to the official rules for the Pokémon Video Game '14 Season unless stated otherwise. The winner of each tournament heat is entered into the Grand Final in London on April 26th, 2014.

Ultimate Pokémon Expert

Ultimate Pokémon Expert is for players aged 13 and over. Players must bring their own console and copy of Pokémon X or Pokémon Y for use in the tournament. The battles are conducted under Double Battle Flat Rules. The Grand Final prize is a trip to Tokyo for two people for seven nights, including flights, accommodation and a trip to the Pokémon Centre. The winner and runner-up at the Grand Final will receive fast track entries to the second round of the Official Play! Pokémon UK VCG Championships in May 2014. Winners will be placed in the appropriate age category for the Play! Pokémon series events based on The Pokémon Company International rules set for the season.

Junior Pokémon Expert

Junior Pokémon Expert is for players aged 12 or under. Players must bring their own console and copy of Pokémon X or Pokémon Y for use in the tournament. The battles are conducted under Double Battle Flat Rules. The Grand Final prize is a family trip for four to The Alton Towers Theme Park & Resort, including 3 nights' accommodation and weekend access to the theme parks. The winner and runner-up at the Grand Final will receive fast track entries to the second round of the Official Play! Pokémon UK VCG Championships in May 2014. Winners will be placed in the appropriate age category for the Play! Pokémon series events based on The Pokémon Company International rules set for the season.

Pokémon Apprentice

Players can bring their own console and copy of Pokémon X or Pokémon Y for use in the tournament, or they will provide players with a console and game with a pre-set team. Battles are conducted under Double Battle Normal Rules. All Pokémon entered as part of the team may not hold items, including Mega Stones, or exceed Level 50 in their normal state. The Grand Final prize is a bundle of Nintendo 3DS games coming out in 2014, plus a collection of Pokémon Trading Card Game packs.

Ultimate Pokémon Team

The Ultimate Pokémon Team is for family teams of two. The older player must be aged 16+, and the younger aged 12 or under. Players can bring their own console and copy of Pokémon X or Pokémon Y for use in the tournament, or they provide players with a console and game with a pre-set team. Battles are conducted under Four Player, Double Battle Normal Rules. All Pokémon entered as part of the team may not hold items, including Mega Stones. The younger team member's Pokémon may not exceed Level 50 in their normal state. The older team member can enter Pokémon at any level. The Grand Final prize is £250 of Nintendo UK Online Store Vouchers, plus a trip for four to London including tickets to the EGX London exhibition.
