On January 31st, 2013, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata revealed that the best selling Nintendo games in 2012 were Pokémon Black and White 2 which sold over 7.5 million combined copies worldwide.

Iwata explained the reason that Nintendo 3DS sales were millions below projected targets was because of the lack of hit titles being released outside of Japan. "I have just explained that in the Japanese market the Nintendo 3DS platform is already established as the market leader. On the other hand, however, we could not launch hit titles which could lead the markets towards the end of the year abroad and sales are largely behind our target overseas. This is one of the main reasons for our downward revision to our annual shipment target from 17.50 million units to 15.00 million units."

To compensate for the lack of hit titles, Nintendo has announced 4 major franchise titles: "DRAGON QUEST VII Eden no Senshitachi," "Tomodachi Collection" (temp.), "MONSTER HUNTER 4" and "Pokémon X/Pokémon Y." In addition, a variety of titles will be released by Nintendo and other Japanese software developers. In that sense, I hope few people are concerned about the momentum of the Nintendo 3DS in the Japanese market. To export the momentum to the overseas markets, we plan to actively release our key titles for Nintendo 3DS which could potentially lead the markets this year. "Pokémon X/Pokémon Y," to be launched in October worldwide, could be the most-anticipated one and "Animal Crossing: New Leaf," released in Japan last year, will be available in the first half of this year. We have already announced that "Fire Emblem Awakening," "Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity," "Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon," "Brain Age: Concentration Training" and "LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins" will be released in the first half of this year."

We are aiming to deliver genuine entertainment that can be enjoyed simultaneously by people from all over the world.

Stunningly dynamic Pokémon battles. Breathtakingly beautiful visuals that take full advantage of the 3DS hardware’s power. An innovate communication system that will make you feel connected with players from around the world as you play the game. Whether this is the player’s first game, or if he or she is a veteran of the Pokémon series, our goal is to deliver genuine entertainment that will make all players smile, regardless of their age, gender, country, language, or culture.

The Pokémon series has always been more than just a game. It’s a series that brings people together, and encourages them to get excited and have fun as if they were at a festival. That is why I wanted to achieve my long-time dream of a worldwide simultaneous release with these new entries to the series.

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y–the evolved sixth generation of Pokémon. Genuine entertainment that people have been waiting for is here. October 2013. I look forward to being able to play with everyone from around the world. Ciao!

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata simultaneously broadcasted worldwide a Nintendo Direct broadcast where he announced Pokémon X and Y (ポケットモンスター X・Y). The games will be released worldwide in October of 2013 for the Nintendo 3DS. The names mark the end of the color naming scheme that have been used on all the main handheld games since the series was first released. This also marks the first time that the games have launched worldwide but it appears that Korea will not be part of the worldwide release as Mr. Iwata did not list it and the on screen caption indicated some countries would not be part of the worldwide release. Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 was just released in Korea on November 8th, 2012. Nintendo 3DS features will be incorporated into the games and the teams are currently still working on the games.

Mr. Iwata noted that a significant number of resources is required to localize the games to each countries language and their challenge has always been how to distribute the Pokémon games around the world at the same time while ensuring that the quality remains high. With the release of Pokémon X and Y, they have been able to overcome this challenge.
