EXPLORE THE NATURAL WONDERS OF THE LENTAL REGION AND UNCOVER THE MYSTERY BEHIND THE ILLUMINA PHENOMENON IN NEW POKÉMON SNAP
Become a Budding Pokémon Photographer When New Pokémon Snap Launches April 30, Exclusively on Nintendo Switch
Get ready to visit the many beautiful isles of the Lental region in the New Pokémon Snap game for the Nintendo Switch family of systems. Filled with diverse ecosystems, from dense jungles to vast deserts, the archipelago of the region is an untouched natural marvel, packed to the brim with Pokémon just waiting to be discovered!
Professor Mirror / Professor Kagami (カガミ博士) and Rita (リタ)
In New Pokémon Snap, players will take on the role of a budding Pokémon photographer and work with the Lental region expert, Professor Mirror, and his assistant, Rita, on an ecological survey to photograph Pokémon thriving in nature. In a new trailer released today, additional footage and details were unveiled for New Pokémon Snap, including its April 30 launch date.
“New Pokémon Snap presents a fun twist on a Pokémon adventure, with enchanting gameplay that lets players see some of their favorite Pokémon in a different light,” said Nick Chavez, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “This new game is a fun addition to the strong lineup of Pokémon titles available on Nintendo Switch, and we can’t wait to see everyone’s pictures when New Pokémon Snap launches on April 30.”
Wild Pokémon are all around and have adapted to thrive in all the various natural expanses of the Lental region. They may be seen living in groups patrolling their territory, wandering serenely on their own or even playing with other Pokémon species. With a careful eye and a photographer’s keen sense of adventure, you’ll be able to spot Pokémon lurking in all sorts of places, including secluded hideaways … and sometimes swooping down suddenly from the sky! Players will be able to interact with Pokémon by throwing a Fluffruit, a tasty fruit found across the region, to catch their attention or watch them eat. You can even use this fruit to help draw out Pokémon into a variety of situations to see how they react. These serendipitous opportunities present a special challenge, and catching them with your camera at the perfect moment may gain you higher scores.
Neo-One (ネオワン号)
Professor Mirror will evaluate and score players’ photos taken on their adventures. Pokémon photography is evaluated based on the subjects’ poses, how large they appear, how directly they’re facing the camera and where they fall in frame. As players take more photos and fulfill research on their journey, they may see Pokémon look and behave in entirely new ways. Players will have to take many photos and use their highest-scoring shots to fill out their Photodex, a collection of Pokémon photographs.
The untouched depths of the Lental region may sound daunting at first, but don’t worry. Explorers will hop into the NEO-ONE, an auto-driving vehicle, which will steer them across various paths on each island and will help free up time to focus on snapping the perfect shots. Throughout your missions, you may even get to see Pokémon looking and behaving differently than ever before. These special moments are memories to savor, so, luckily, you’ll always have your trusty camera on hand to capture them for Pokémon posterity.
Some Pokémon and vegetation that players may discover will appear to have a special glow. These strange occurrences are found only in the Lental region and are known as the Illumina Phenomenon. Jump into the trusty NEO-ONE and uncover the mystery behind the Illumina Phenomenon!

In 2021, Pokémon will continue that tradition by aligning with another universal unifying force — music. Headlined by pop icon Katy Perry, the star-studded program created in partnership with Universal Music Group (UMG), the world leader in music-based entertainment, accompanies fan-focused activations celebrating 25 years of Pokémon across the franchise’s portfolio of video games, mobile apps, animation, merchandise and more. Global Music Celebration: P25 Music
Every party needs a great playlist. To celebrate 25 years, The Pokémon Company International is teaming up with UMG through their brands strategies division, Universal Music Group for Brands, to make 2021 the biggest Pokémon party in history — and everyone is invited. Pokémon is working with some of the biggest names in music, from rising artists to award-winning global superstars, for the program, titled P25 Music. Pop icon Katy Perry was revealed today as a premier collaborator in the massive, yearlong music campaign.
“Pokémon has been a constant in my life from playing the original video games on my Game Boy, to trading Pokémon TCG cards at lunch, to the adventures of catching Pokémon on the street with Pokémon GO. I’ve even visited the Pokémon Café in Japan while on tour! It is an honor to be chosen to help celebrate a franchise that has given me so much joy in the last 25 years, and to be able to watch it evolve in the ways it’s provided that kind of electric joy for the kids in my life and around the world,” said Katy Perry.
“In Katy Perry, we see a kindred spirit to Pokémon, whose world is bright, fun and uplifting,” said Colin Palmer, vice president of marketing at The Pokémon Company International. “Katy is a wonderful ambassador to help us celebrate 25 years of Pokémon, and we can’t wait for music fans everywhere to experience the exciting collaborations we have planned.”
“We are honored to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pokémon and the significant cultural impact this beloved franchise continues to have around the world. Working together, we have developed dynamic year-round programming involving artists from across UMG’s labels — because what better way to create a global celebration than through the power of music,” said LJ Gutierrez, General Manager, UMGB.
Details about Katy Perry’s participation, additional artist surprises and more about the P25 Music program will be announced throughout the year.
25 Years of Adventures: A Journey Through the Pokémon World
Since the first video games launched in 1996, the franchise has explored a new region in the Pokémon world with the introduction of each core series game. In 2021, The Pokémon Company International will invite fans to relive their journeys through each of these regions in a yearlong program, beginning with the most recently discovered Galar region from Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield and ending with the classic Kanto region from the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue games. Beginning today, fans can visit a new website that will serve as the hub for this and all fan celebration activities as they are announced throughout the year, located here: https://pokemon.com/25

Fans can also look forward to even more special merchandise tied to the anniversary celebrations from licensees including Jazwares, Scholastic, Mattel, Funko, PowerA, and The Wand Company. Additional partners and the ways they will celebrate the anniversary will be announced throughout the year.
Special Collections: The Pokémon Trading Card Game & Pokémon Center
The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) is a cornerstone of the brand, and fans can look forward to special 25th anniversary-themed collections of the Pokémon TCG later in 2021. In the meantime, fans will soon be able to collect oversize cards featuring Pikachu and beloved first partner Pokémon from the various regions featured in the franchise-spanning retrospective. Fans can also expect 25th anniversary-themed products from Pokémon Center, the premier destination for official, high-quality Pokémon merchandise in the US and Canada. Choose between Single Strike and Rapid Strike for powerful or sneaky attacks, coming soon to the Pokémon TCG! The Pokémon TCG: Sword & Shield Battle Styles expansion will arrive on March 19, 2021.
New Battle Styles Gameplay Mechanic Coming to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Beginning with Sword & Shield—Battle Styles Expansion
Dec. 15, 2020—Today, The Pokémon Company International announced the new Battle Styles gameplay mechanic for the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Any Pokémon in the Pokémon TCG can have a Battle Style, with Single Strike cards decorated with a hint of red and Rapid Strike cards with a hint of blue. In addition, Single Strike and Rapid Strike cards are available as Trainer and Energy cards, which tend to assist Pokémon of that particular Battle Style and allow players to build a Single Strike or Rapid Strike deck.
Trainers will be able to collect, trade, and play with Battle Style cards—such as Single Strike Urshifu V, Rapid Strike Urshifu V, Single Strike Tyranitar V, and Rapid Strike Empoleon V—in the new Sword & Shield—Battle Styles expansion from The Pokémon Company International. The main objective in Pokémon: Kids Winter Fest is to earn Razz Berries. Once players earn a certain number of Razz Berries during a game, they will be awarded a badge pouch containing Pokémon badges to add to their collection. There are over 890 Pokémon badges to collect! Razz Berries collected by players are also added to their team’s daily total, which will add to their progress in the team races. The first team to cross a race checkpoint will be awarded an in-game item.
Players can also earn extra Razz Berries and Pokémon badges by reaching milestones in the team races, using the daily rewards wheel, or collecting special daily rewards. They can even collect Legendary Pokémon badges when obtaining Legendary pouches, and Mythical Pokémon badges by completing the daily Mythical missions!
Pokémon: Kids Winter Fest features the following minigames and activities:
Battle Dunk
Tapping with their mouse or fingers to aim and release their selected Pokémon, players will need to knock as many enemy Pokémon out of the arena as they can without running out of energy. But be very careful—the other Pokémon are also trying to knock you out of the arena!
Pair Up
In a quickfire matching game, players will have 60 seconds to test their Pokémon knowledge and find the matching cards as quickly as possible for the best score. This game has four levels of difficulty: match all of the same Pokémon together, match each Pokémon with its Evolution, match each Pokémon with a card showing its correct type, or match each Pokémon with a card showing a type that it is weak against!
Relay Ridge
In this obstacle course, players will need to get as far as they can by safely moving Pokémon along the top of the cliff without falling off or hitting too many obstacles. When reaching checkpoints, Pokémon will automatically swap, their health will be restored, and Razz Berries will be rewarded.
Snow Holes
A group of Diglett is causing chaos in the snow fields and threatening to break the ice! Players will need to get rid of them by tapping as quickly as possible. Dugtrio might even make an appearance for a bonus round!
Waterfall Crossing
In this minigame, players will need to help Pokémon cross the river safely, by bouncing them across on their raft using their mouse or fingers. But they must also watch out for Jigglypuff! This Pokémon will make the players’ Pokémon fall asleep, and players will need to spend precious time waking them up!
Winter Fest Scene Creator
This corner of Pokémon: Kids Winter Fest will give Trainers a platform to express their creativity by putting together their very own Winter Fest scene filled with Pokémon. A range of characters, backgrounds and items are available to be added to the picture, creating fun and wintry scenes.

We’ve learned a lot from running both live and in-game events in Pokémon GO these past few years. We’re excited to put all we’ve learned to work in a brand-new way of experiencing in-game Pokémon GO events: Seasons.
Pokémon originally discovered in the Kalos region are coming
So far in Pokémon GO, we’ve encountered Pokémon originally discovered in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Galar. Starting Wednesday, December 2, 2020, we’ll be meeting Pokémon first discovered in the region where dreams and adventures begin—Kalos! With the recent arrival of Mega Evolution to Pokémon GO, it feels timely that Pokémon originally discovered in Kalos—the region where Mega Evolution was first discovered—will be making their debut.
12 Days of Friendship event
To prepare for these exciting developments, there will be a series of exciting bonuses available TODAY as we kick off our 12 Days of Friendship event! After the GO Beyond update goes live, there’ll also be lots to do in December to help you take advantage of all the changes, such as December Community Day and fun holiday events!
Since 2016, a lot has changed, both in the real world and in Pokémon GO. What hasn’t changed, however, is the fact that we have each other and our Pokémon. As Pokémon GO has grown, so have we—as Trainers, as a community, and as people. The game has grown beyond our wildest imaginations, and we’re thrilled to see it continue strong four years later. It wouldn’t have been possible without all of you.
Now it’s time to GO Beyond—together!
GO Beyond: Level up redesign coming soon; level cap increased to 50!
Trainers, For the first time since the game’s launch, leveling up is being rebalanced in Pokémon GO! We’re rebalancing a wide assortment of features and systems to make leveling up more fun than ever. And for those Trainers who’ve already reached level 40, you’ll be pleased to know that you’ll soon have the ability to reach up to level 50—so long as you’re up to the challenge, that is!
Leveling up in Pokémon GO will soon be more fun and accessible
If you haven’t played Pokémon GO in a while, you might be feeling a bit skittish about jumping back in. But don’t worry! Soon, leveling up in Pokémon GO will be more accessible than ever.
Starting on November 30, 2020, you’ll earn more XP from catching Pokémon, evolving Pokémon, hatching Eggs, registering new Pokédex entries, and more. In some cases, the XP earned will be as much as double what it was before, so it’ll be easier than ever for Trainers to catch up to their higher-level friends!
Become a Legacy 40 Trainer before the end of year!
Trainers who reach level 40 before Thursday, December 31, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. local time will earn the title of Legacy 40 Trainer and earn some exclusive rewards, like Timed Research that rewards an exclusive Gyarados Hat avatar item and a special Legacy 40 medal!
To help Trainers reach level 40 faster, a double Catch XP bonus will be live from Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. to Thursday, December 31, 2020, at 11:59 p.m. local time. Additionally, Trainers will soon be able to power up their Pokémon to a higher CP than was previously possible at each Trainer level. Try powering up your Pokémon to see the difference!
Level 40 Trainers, get ready for a whole new challenge!
Already at level 40 and excited to finally put your extra XP to use? Well, the wait’s nearly over—and there’s a ton to look forward to when you level up! However, surpassing level 40 will take more than just XP. You’ll also need to complete new Level-Up Research between levels—and these tasks can be quite challenging!
Here’s some of what you can expect to face in order to reach each level.
Level 41: Submit your catching skills to a test of endurance! You’ll be expected to catch a high number of Pokémon in a single day, along with other tasks, in order to reach level 41.
Level 42: From evolving Eevee into each of its available Evolutions, to using certain Evolution items on specific Pokémon, reaching level 42 will test your knowledge of Pokémon Evolutions.
Level 43: Show us your mastery of Gym battles and Raid Battles! You’ll also need to have earned a certain number of pPlatinum medals before you can advance to level 43. You might find yourself with a surprise avatar item at the end, too!
Level 44: Battling other Trainers has been a fundamental aspect of the Pokémon RPGs since the beginning, but it’s still relatively new to Pokémon GO. Have you been developing your skills in battle? You’ll have to if you want to reach level 44!
Level 45: You’ve battled in Gyms, raids, and the GO Battle League, but to reach level 45 you’ll need to focus your efforts on taking down those pesky Team GO Rocket villains! You might find yourself with a surprise avatar item at the end, too!
Level 46: Get ready to explore, intrepid Trainers! To reach level 46, you’ll need to complete a number of Field Research tasks, hatch a certain number of Eggs, and document your daily adventures using GO Snapshot!
Level 47: You may think you’ve mastered the art of battling in raids, but the requirements to reach level 47 will really test your mettle! For example, one challenge will require you to win raids with teams that meet certain qualifications—and that’s just the beginning!
Level 48: The requirements to reach level 48 are focused on one of the most important things in all of Pokémon GO: your friendship with your Buddy Pokémon! From kilometers walked to the number of Souvenirs you’ve collected, reaching level 48 will require you and your buddy to be laser-focused on developing your friendship with one another. You might find yourself with a surprise avatar item at the end, too!
Level 49: If there’s one thing that matches the importance of your friendship with your Buddy Pokémon, it’s your friendships with other Trainers. The people we meet on our Pokémon journeys bring so much to our lives, and cultivating those friendships is key to becoming an amazing Pokémon Trainer. Reach level 49 by sending Gifts, acquiring Lucky Pokémon through trades, and more.
Level 50: This is it! The home stretch! To reach the highest available level in Pokémon GO, you must master all aspects of the game. Some examples include making Excellent Throws, catching Legendary Pokémon, and defeating Team GO Rocket Leaders with Pokémon under 1,500 CP, so you can tell this will be the ultimate test of whether you’re ready to stand among the most accomplished Trainers in Pokémon GO. And, of course, you might also find yourself with a surprise avatar item at the end!
Pokémon GO will also be introducing Candy XL. These Candies will be required to power up Pokémon to even higher CP than was previously possible, and can be acquired either by catching Pokémon or by converting and combining Candy into Candy XL. There will also be other ways to obtain Candy XL, so stay tuned!
Keep an eye out for special Timed Research to complete in December to help you level up! And for those of you working on pushing past level 40, why not give your fellow Trainers a hand as they try to reach level 40 themselves? There’ll be tons of opportunities for everyone to earn XP throughout November and December—like during the 12 Days of Friendship event! Learn more about this event here.
GO Beyond: Exciting Pokémon GO gameplay changes to come!
In addition to the updates to XP and Trainer leveling outlined above, you can also look forward to updates regarding encountering and catching Pokémon, Adventure Sync, Buddy Adventure, Field Research, Gifts, and more. We’ll provide more information once these changes go live during the week of November 30, 2020!
Leveling redesign testing premieres in Australia
A portion of level 40 Trainers in Australia will soon be given early access to some of these new features! We’ll be rolling out the level-cap increase to Australia tomorrow for testing before making it available to Trainers around the world. Trainers who make it to level 41 and above during the testing period will receive a survey to provide their feedback. As we tune and rebalance in response to this feedback, the test may change. Level 40 Trainers who power up Pokémon past their previous CP maximum will be unable to use those Pokémon in the Master League format for the time being in order to maintain a fair competition. However, those Pokémon can still defend Gyms.
Please be aware of your surroundings and follow guidelines from local health authorities when playing Pokémon GO. Upcoming events are subject to change.

Meet Mizutamari Higashi, the Illustrator behind Pokémon: Twilight Wings
Read the first in a series of interviews with the creative team behind this extraordinary animated series.
Pokémon: Twilight Wings, the recent limited animated series, provides a unique look into the lives of the people and Pokémon who reside in the Galar region. Taking a deeper look, we're talking to some of the minds behind the scenes to learn more about what inspired them when creating the series, which is now available to watch on Pokémon TV and the official Pokémon YouTube channel. To kick off this four-part series of interviews, we dive into the deep world of concept art and color scripts with illustrator Mizutamari Higashi.
Q: I understand you took the lead on concept art and color scripts for Pokémon: Twilight Wings. To begin, would you mind defining for us exactly what concept art and color scripts are, and how the two differ?
A: Concept art means pictures you draw to give concrete form to the mental images you see when you read—for example, a script or other text. People may get different mental images from the text, but concept art gets the whole production team on the same page with a clear goal to aim for. So, the better the concept art is, the better the final film will turn out.
Color scripts are blueprints for the artwork. They consist of a series of pictures drawn to show how the story should appear on-screen. They're often used to direct the colors or lighting of a scene, as the name suggests. Concept art and color scripts both require artistic ability and an understanding of how a story is directed. Both demand a lot of thought and are difficult but are also very worthwhile work!
Q: Your illustrations have a distinctively warm, somehow nostalgic touch. What concepts are important to you in your illustration work?
A: Thank you very much! A lot of things depend on the motif of what I'm drawing, but in general, I aim to express a sense of atmosphere. I've always wanted my drawings to express the smells, or the feeling of the breeze, of the scenery I grew up in, but I don't think I've been able to do that yet—not to mention that when I work, I get caught up with fulfilling the request at hand and tend to forget that basic desire... Still, if you feel nostalgia or warmth from my work, maybe I've been able to express what I wanted a little after all. That makes me very happy. Thank you very much.
Q: Did you know about Pokémon beforehand? Has it come up in your life in ways that left a lasting memory or impression? If so, please tell us about that.
A: Of course I knew about Pokémon. A French friend of mine once asked me, “Do you know this song?” and began humming a melody, but I had no idea what the song was. They told me, “C'mon, it's the Pokémon theme song!” But the melody wasn't from “Mezase Pokémon Master” [“Aim to Be a Pokémon Master,” the first opening theme song of Pokémon the Series in Japan]. That was when it hit me that the series had different theme songs in different countries! But we all loved Pokémon the same no matter which country we were in, and I remember feeling proud for some reason when my friend told me they had grown up watching Pokémon, too.
Q: I imagine you also had to create concept art for things that weren't featured in the games. What was on your mind during that process?
A: Since there was already a lovely story in place, I concentrated on finding the portrayals and designs that would express that story the best. I think I was in a very laid-back position since I already had a story and direction plans that made sense to me. I'm very fortunate to have been able to work on something under the title of Pokémon, and with this team.
Q: In one piece of concept art for Twilight Wings, we can see a Galarian townscape as well as John and Tommy talking. Can you tell us about any concepts or themes behind this?
A: When I create concept art, I feel it's crucial that the image captures the essence of the story. Since John and Tommy are original characters in Twilight Wings, they felt especially important to me. As I was drawing them, I hoped to convey this story about these kids in the hospital, and how far they could go—how far they could fly.
Q: Images from the color scripts also appear in the ending sequences of Twilight Wings episodes. Can you tell us if you have a favorite among those images—and if so, why?
A: I'm so glad they've even been used in the ending sequences! I think the one that's dearest to me is the image from Episode 4 of Nessa and Milotic midjump, because I think I was really able to celebrate Nessa with that one. I always hope to draw characters in a way that celebrates or encourages them.
Q: Are there any easy-to-miss details you'd like viewers to notice in the ending sequences, or behind-the-scenes anecdotes about the production process you'd like to share?
A: For the image from Episode 4 of Nessa in the waiting room, I wanted to depict a heavy atmosphere to convey Nessa feeling depressed, so I drew inspiration from a certain animated film—one that has heavy subject matter, but has earned a place in Japan's history.
Q: Can you tell us about any upcoming highlights you're looking forward to?
A: I'm obviously excited to see all the characters people know and love, but I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Twilight Wings' new characters, John and Tommy, and where their journey will lead them!
Q: Lastly, is there anything you'd like to say to fans of Twilight Wings and of Pokémon as a whole?
A: I'm truly grateful for my good fortune to have been involved with a work like this. As with other well-known works, the story of Twilight Wings has been imbued with multiple layers of meaning by Director [Shingo] Yamashita. I think you can watch it once and take pleasure in the animation, then delve deeper into the story's layers on second and third viewings, so I'd love it if you were all to watch Twilight Wings a number of times and experience it as deeply as you want. Thank you very much!
