Niantic has announced that Jessie and James from Team Rocket will be flying around in-game in their Meowth balloon and that Team GO Rocket has taken over the GO Fest Weekly Challenge.
Battle Jessie and James by finding their Meowth balloon!
Trainers, A mysterious duo has arrived in Pokémon GO via a...Meowth balloon? The two call themselves Jessie and James, and it looks like they’re up to no good! Help us defeat them!
As Team GO Rocket’s balloons prowl the skies, we’ve been investigating them further. The Grunts piloting the balloons are just as perplexed as we are as to where these characters came from. From what we understand, Team GO Rocket has assigned Shadow Pokémon to protect Jessie and James as they seek to create more Shadow Pokémon.
This is where you all come in! Check the map to see whether Jessie and James’s Meowth balloon is flying by. When the Meowth balloon appears, tap it to battle Jessie and James.
Plus, avatar items inspired by Jessie and James are now available in the shop!
It looks like Jessie and James won’t be here for long, so let’s GO teach these silly villains who’s boss before they leave.
Team GO Rocket has taken over the GO Fest Weekly Challenge!
Trainers, Remember when we said week two of the GO Fest Weekly Challenges would be battle-themed? There’s been a slight change of plans. Technically, it’s still battle-themed. However, with Team GO Rocket balloons appearing more often and other disturbances in the world of Pokémon GO that we believe are related, the GO Fest Weekly Challenge: Battle Timed Research will focus entirely on taking down Team GO Rocket!

Keep your eyes peeled for...

2× Stardust when you defeat Team GO Rocket Grunts and Team GO Rocket balloons
The Meowth balloon appearing more often than usual
The opportunity to use a Charged TM to let your Pokémon forget the move Frustration and learn a new move
Niantic has announced details about the Team GO Rocket Balloons that have appeared in Pokémon GO starting on July 7th, 2020. The Willow Report: Strange Scraps were reporting on this event from June 30th, 2020 until July 6th, 2020.
Look up, Trainers—Team GO Rocket balloons have arrived in Pokémon GO!
Trainers, Mysterious balloons have popped up in the sky, and the culprit is Team GO Rocket! With these Team GO Rocket balloon invasions, you can now battle Team GO Rocket anywhere on the map. We ask that you keep an eye out for balloons in the sky and battle the Team GO Rocket Grunts and Leaders piloting them. Who knows—you may even find Giovanni! Reports show that they appear once every few hours, but could appear more often during takeovers.
1. Tap a balloon to battle Team GO Rocket: Be ready for a challenge! Tap a Team GO Rocket balloon, pick your battle party, and defeat Team GO Rocket to rescue their Shadow Pokémon. Team GO Rocket balloons will hover near you for a limited time, so be sure to check the map for balloons and tap them before they fly away!
2. Equip your Rocket Radar to encounter balloons with Team GO Rocket Leaders: When you have a Rocket Radar equipped, you can find Sierra, Cliff, or Arlo piloting a Team GO Rocket balloon.
3. Equip your Super Rocket Radar to encounter Giovanni: It appears that even the boss of Team GO Rocket himself can be found riding in a Team GO Rocket balloon! If you activate and equip a Super Rocket Radar, Giovanni’s balloon is certain to appear.
Turns out, Professor Willow and the team leaders were on to something when they discovered those scraps of paper! With Team GO Rocket flying across the world of Pokémon GO, we’ll need as many of you as possible to help defeat them! Keep an eye out for these Rocket balloons, and continue to train. Hopefully this will be the extent of their mischief and they’ll surrender now before we have to prepare for more fights. But just in case...we might have to revisit the original plan for the GO Fest Weekly Challenge: Battle Timed Research. Stay tuned for more updates on what that Timed Research will now entail, as well as the accompanying battle-themed event.
