Hikari's nickname in the Japanese version of the show is Pikari (ピカリ). Pika (ピカ) translates to sparkling and it fits well with Hikari's Japanese name as only the first syllable is changed. In the English dub her nickname is translated to "Diamond Dandruff" to describe her sparkling hairdo caused by Plusle and Minun.

The explanations for Dawn's nicknames are different. In the Japanese version, "Pikapika" is an onomatopoeia for "sparkling".

English Dub
Kenny: Your hair is sparkling like a diamond.
Leona: Like dandruff!
Kenny: I'm calling you "Diamond Dandruff".
Leona: Yeah! Good idea.
Kenny: Or Dee Dee for short.

Japanese
Kengo: Your head looks crazy.

Yumomi: It's sparkling.

Kengo: Rather than Hikari, you look more like a "Pikari".

Yumomi: Good one, Kengo!

Kengo: From today on, you're Pikari!

Momoan's introductory speech was completely rewritten in the English version. In the Japanese version, she is just counting Pokémon out loud.

English Dub
Marian: The cheers and excitement are mounting which can mean only one thing...
Marian: Get ready for the fabulous Daybreak Town Pokémon Contest!

Japanese
Momoan: One Pokémon! Two Pokémon!

Momoan: Three, four Pokémon! Five Pokémon!

Momoan: Let's obtain a ribbon at this Contest!

The English dub infers that Jessie would be mad at James and Meowth if she did poorly in the competition and that they are sad because she is popular and they wouldn't because she did well. In the Japanese version, Kojiro and Nyarth are crying because they are happy for Musashi and complement her on an amazing performance.

English Dub
James: She's a hit and we won't be!
Mewoth: Better she rocks their world then ours.

Japanese
Kojiro: Oh, they like it!
Nyarth: A perfect performance that will go down in history!
