Ash and co. are continuing their way towards Goldenrod City, but right now they are taking a break by a river. Ash and co. are fishing. They haven't caught anything yet, and Ash is getting annoyed. Misty tells him to be quiet, and maybe they will catch something. Brock wonders if they are using the right bait. Suddenly, Misty's rod gets caught on something. Misty begins to reel it in. She pulls on her rod hard, and she finds out that a tea pot was hooked on her rod. Misty realizes that she has to do something different. She gets out a lure that looks like her. With the lure hooked on the rod, Misty is confident that she will catch something this time. Misty hopes to be a Water Pokémon Master, which is why she wants to capture something.

Suddenly, a Totodile jumps out of the water and lands on a rock. He begins to dance happily. Ash looks up Totodile in his Pokédex. Misty wants to capture Totodile so badly, but Ash wants to capture it, too. Misty throws her lure at Totodile, and Totodile catches it in its mouth. Totodile doesn't like the lure, and it spits it out. Then it winks at Misty. Misty thinks that Totodile is cuter than ever. Ash tells Pikachu to use Thundershock. The electric attack hits Totodile, and then Ash throws a Pokéball at it. Totodile escapes from the Pokéball. Ash and Misty begin to fight over who gets to catch the Totodile. Misty then throws her Pokéball at Totodile. Totodile jumps back on the rock and uses its Water Gun to Ash and co. Then Totodile jumps into the water and escapes.

Ash and co. get back onto their feet. They notice that Totodile is gone, and Ash and Misty run to find Totodile. Brock goes along with them, too. Totodile gets out of the water in a different location. It is hungry. Team Rocket is nearby, and Jessie and James are eating food. Meowth wonders how they can eat when they are lost. Meowth is afraid the boss may kick them off the team if they keep on messing up. Jessie and James don't seem to be worrying about it. Totodile sees Team Rocket and walks up to them. Jessie holds out a snack for Meowth. Totodile clamps onto Jessie's hand. Jessie screams and tries to shake the Totodile off. Then Totodile eats all the other snacks. Team Rocket is angry at Totodile. Totodile uses its Water Gun on them to blast them away.

Ash and co. spot Totodile walking by. Ash and Misty both hold out their Pokéballs to capture Totodile, but Misty holds out her Lure Ball. Misty says that Lure Balls are the best way to capture water Pokémon, so she wants to give it a try. Ash thinks it's a good idea, and he also gets out his Lure Ball. Both Ash and Misty throw their Lure Balls at the same time. Totodile jumps up and the Lure Balls hit it. The Pokéballs land behind a bush. Ash and Misty run to see who caught the Totodile, but they can't figure out which Pokéball belongs to who. Ash and Misty begin to fight over the Pokéball containing the caught Totodile. Brock takes the Pokéball. He says that the only way to decide who gets to keep it is with a Pokémon battle.

Brock declares a 3-on-3 battle, and whoever wins will get to keep Totodile. Ash knows that all of Misty's Pokémon are water types, so he chooses Pikachu to battle. Misty isn't worried at all. She has a secret weapon to beat Pikachu. She uses Togepi for the battle.

The battle begins. Togepi begins to run towards Pikachu. Pikachu becomes nervous because it doesn't want to attack Togepi. Ash tells Pikachu to try a Thundershock attack, but Pikachu doesn't listen to Ash. Togepi gives Pikachu a big hug. Then it uses its Charm attack. Pikachu runs out of the battlefield and loses. Misty wins the first round.

Ash knows that water Pokémon are weak against grass types, so he sends out Chikorita. Misty sends out Staryu, and round two begins. Chikorita starts off with Razor Leaf. Staryu dodges the attack and uses Swift. Chikorita gets damaged by the Swift attack, but then it hits Staryu with its Tackle attack. Staryu is able to stand its ground, and it fights back with Water Gun. Chikorita slides on the ground, still willing to battle. Chikorita uses Vine Whip. Staryu dodges it, and then uses Tackle. Chikorita dodges the attack and wraps its vines around Staryu. Then Chikorita whips Staryu to the ground. Staryu faints, and Ash wins the second round.

Now whoever wins the third round gets to keep Totodile. Ash sends out Bulbasaur, and Misty sends out Poliwag. The battle begins. Meanwhile, Team Rocket is on a log floating down the river. Jessie and James hope they never see Totodile again. Meowth thinks that they should see Totodile since Totodile is the type of Pokémon they need to bring to the boss. All they have to do is catch it. The log hits a rock. Team Rocket leaps into the air and lands into the water. Jessie sees Ash and Misty battling each other. Meowth suggests that they steal their Pokémon when the battle is over because Ash and co.'s Pokémon will be too tired to battle. Jessie and James like Meowth's plan.

Back with the battle, Bulbasaur uses Razor Leaf. Poliwag counters with Water Gun. Bulbasaur dodges the attack and hits Poliwag with a Razor Leaf attack. Poliwag falls to the ground, and it looks like the battle is over. Suddenly, Poliwag begins to glow with a bright light. It evolves into Poliwhirl. Misty is excited that she got a new Pokémon, and she now has a higher chance to win the battle. Ash looks up Poliwhirl in his Pokédex. The battle begins again. Bulbasaur uses Tackle, and Poliwhirl use Body Slam. Poliwhirl's strong body slams Bulbasaur to the ground. Bulbasaur fights back with Razor Leaf, an attack that Poliwhirl easily dodges. Then Bulbasaur begins to charge up a Solarbeam attack. While Bulbasaur is charging up, Poliwhirl uses Bubble. The attacks surge into Bulbasaur's body. Bulbasaur is able to stand, and it releases a Solarbeam attack at Poliwhirl. Poliwhirl faints, and Ash wins the battle.

Brock congratulates Ash for winning, and he gives Ash the Pokéball containing the Totodile. Suddenly, two people come out. They are dressed up in funny costumes. A Wobbuffet appears, and Ash and co. immediately know that it is Team Rocket. Team Rocket says their motto. Meowth demands for Pikachu now that Ash and co. are worn out. Ash refuses to give them Pikachu, and he sends out Totodile. Totodile bites Jessie's hair. Jessie shakes Totodile off her hair. She finds out that some of her hair has been bitten off. She becomes furious and sends out Arbok. James sends out Weezing to help her.

Totodile bites onto Arbok's tail, whips it around, and hurls it at Meowth. Then Totodile begins to dance. Weezing uses Sludge attack, but Totodile continues to dance to dodge the attacks. Totodile finishes Weezing off with its Scratch attack. Finally, Totodile hits Team Rocket with its Water Gun attack, and Team Rocket blasts off again.

Ash and co. notice that Totodile is full of energy. Totodile begins to dance with Pikachu. Misty tells Ash that she is not angry that he won Totodile because she has herself a Poliwhirl. Now that Ash has Totodile, Ash and co. continue their way towards Goldenrod City.

Script Error

The English dub narrator says nothing about Ash continuing his journey to Goldenrod City like the Japanese narrator says about Kogane City The Japanese narrator also suggests that Kasumi is teaching Satoshi and Takeshi how to fish while the English dub narrator states that Ash is coming to a realization instead.

English Narrator: Today we find our friends taking a breather on the lush bank of a lazy river. With time to think, Ash has come to an important realization.
Japanese Narrator: Satoshi and his friends continue their journey towards Kogane City. Today, we find them fishing at a riverside. Satoshi and Takeshi are being taught the art of fishing by...

Script Error

In the Japanese original, Kasumi has proclaimed herself a Fishing Master. Satoshi calls her 'Fishing Master' in the Japanese original but Ash just calls catching Pokémon by fishing boring and then states he could have caught 10 Pokémon normally in the same amount of time. Ash then suggests to Brock that they give up but Satoshi in the Japanese original was just wondering if Takeshi was having any better luck than he was.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash This is a boring way to catch Pokémon. Knock knock, Miss Fishing Master.
Misty Be quiet. What? なに?
Ash I could've gone out an caught 10 of 'em by now. I'm not catching anything.
Misty Would you please shut your mouth! Be quiet!
Ash Don't you think we should give up? Takeshi, how are you doing?

Script Error

Satoshi suggests that it might be his rod (釣り竿) but Ash just complains that he's been sitting there too long. Kasumi tries teach Satoshi some patience but Misty just suggests that they be a bit more quiet. Satoshi says Kasumi has also been fishing for an hour and also hasn't caught anything while Ash says he wouldn't mind sitting for 2 hours if Misty was quiet for that time.

Character English Translation Japanese
Ash How long are we going to have to sit here like this? Maybe there's something wrong with the fishing rod?
Misty I know it seems boring but if we're really quiet, maybe it will only take another hour. Listen, fishing is a battle against oneself. Impatience means loss.
Ash As long as you're quiet I don't care if we're here another 2 hours. You're saying that but you've been sitting there for an hour without catching anything yourself.
Misty You're the one complaining about everything. Why don't you be quiet! That's why I'm saying impatience means loss!

Script Error

Misty identifies the catch as a tea kettle while Kasumi is too stunned to really say anything significant. Satoshi makes fun of Kasumi by saying that's what he was expecting from the 'master' but Ash was impressed with the fight the tea kettle put up. Takeshi is bad at the person who litered but Brock tells Misty to throw it back in and try to get a coffee marker instead.

Character English Translation Japanese
Misty I just caught a tea kettle. What? No way...
Ash It put up a pretty good fight though... Just as expected of the master.
Brock Could you throw it back and try for a coffee maker? I wish people would properly dispose of their waste...
Misty I came here for Pokémon not appliances! Everyone makes mistakes.

Script Error

The name of Misty's lure is different than Kasumi's.

Misty: Introducing the Mini Misty lure.
Kasumi: Namely, the Kasumi Special, Version 3!

Script Error

Satoshi cannot believe its the 3rd version of the lure while Ash thinks the lure is going to scare the Pokémon.

Satoshi: Isn't that going to scare the Pokémon?
Satoshi: The third model of that thing, huh?

Script Error

Kasumi doesn't say anything about a promise to herself like Misty does in the English dub. Kasumi then does a prayer to the God of Water Pokémon which was redone to just Misty wishing it would happen in the English dub. Satoshi and Takeshi then end up wonder what Kasumi is actually talking about.

Character English Translation Japanese
Misty When I was a little girl back in Cerulean City, I made a solemn promise to myself to dedicate my life to learning all I can about Water Pokémon, training them to the very best of my ability and always be their friend. There's got to be a cute, playful and very lovely Water Pokémon that'd swim anywhere and everywhere in the great oceans with me.
Misty I want to capture and train as many Water Pokémon as I can and that's why I'm hoping with all my might to catch one here today. O God of Water Pokémon, please grant this frail maiden her one wish!
Ash Misty's kinda scarying me. "Frail maiden"?
Brock She's almost as scary as that Mini Misty. "God of Water Pokémon"?

Script Error

Kasumi specifically states in the Japanese original that her prayers have been answered. The English dub removed any reference to prayer.

Misty: I just knew my patience would pay off and now I've found another wonderful Water Pokémon to train.
Kasumi: My prayers have been answered! After all, Waninoko is a Water Pokémon.

Script Error

Yet again, the English dub's script was modified to remove the 'God' reference that Kasumi refers to in the Japanese original.

Misty: Sorry Ash but the reason this Totodile won't stay with you is 'cus it obviously wants to be trained by me just like all of my other Water Pokémon.
Kasumi: Wait a second! This Waninoko is the prince given unto me by the God of Water Pokémon!

Script Error

Musashi in the Japanese original tells Nyarth they need to move forward from their past mistakes but James says they can find new ways of messing up in the English dub. Kojiro says part of the normal Japanese Rocket motto while the English dub modifies his Rocket motto line a bit. Jessie then asks Wobbuffet if he's afraid of failing while Musashi complemented Sonansu on a good appearance. The English dub then cut James line and just had him making 'Woo!' noises.

Character English Translation Japanese
James Jessie's right. I'm sure we can find brand new ways of messing up. There's no point in regretting a past of repeated failures.
Jessie We're Team Rocket, messing up at the speed of light! We have to move forward believing that we'll achieve something today!
James We may mess up but we do it right! A white tomorrow awaits us!
Jessie You aren't afraid of a little failure are you Wobbuffet? Hey, you time your spontaneous appearances quite well.
James *Line Cut from English Dub* And with that, let's get fired up!

Script Error

The English dub really hates rice balls.

Team Rocket:Come on, let's get it!
Rocket Gang: Give back our rice balls!

Scene Cut

The English dub cut some dialog out when Team Rocket was being Water Gunned by Totodile. Nyarth's dialog in the Japanese original is extremely hard to understand and the Animanga and the closed captions both skip his dialog.

Character English Translation Japanese
Musashi *Lines cut in English dub* What did you do that for?!
Kojiro We didn't even do anything yet! Again!
Nyarth(Rockets) We're blasting off already! Our achievement...!

Script Error

Satoshi and Kasumi both specifically say 'Lure ball' instead of the standard 'monster ball' when they throw them.

Ash/Misty: Poké ball, go!
Satoshi/Kasumi: Go, Lure Ball!

Script Error

Takeshi says they should have written their names on the Lure balls while Brock just says they should work it out maturely.

Brock: I'm sure you both can work this out maturely.
Takeshi: You should've written your names on them.

Script Error

As Togepi comes toward Pikachu, Satoshi tells Pikachu not to flinch while Ash just wonders what's wrong with Pikachu. Flinch (ひるむ) is the same in-game Japanese term.

Ash: What's the matter Pikachu?
Satoshi: Don't flinch, Pikachu!

Scene Cut

The English dub cut a line while Kasumi and Togepi are celebrating.

Kasumi: Hooray! My Pikachu Blockade Strategy worked perfectly!

Script Error

Kasumi continues with her Water Pokémon Master dogma while Misty says she's defending her honor as a gym leader.

Misty: So is my reputation as a Cerulean City gym leader!
Kasumi: And I am staking my honor as Water Pokémon Master!

Script Error

Nyarth specifically states that Waninoko's Water Gun was extremely powerful but Meowth just says Totodile in general was strong.

Meowth: Totodile's the kind of Pokémon that'd get us back on the boss's good side.
Nyarth: That Water Gun was extremely powerful!

Script Error

Kasumi talks about her Nyorozo's skin while Misty is happy that she will have two new Pokémon.

Misty:Now I'm gonna have a totally new Poliwhirl and a totally new Totodile!
Kasumi: How cool! Its sleek skin looks great!

Script Error

Musashi and Jessie introduce themselves differently.

Jessie: We're from the local Pokémon Battler's Ladies Auxiliary and we're here to congratulate you!
Musashi: We would like to give our congratulatory address in commemoration of your victory, sir!

Script Error

Nyarth wonders if its the same Waninoko they encountered earlier while Team Rocket in the English dub is concerned that Totodile is going to bite them. Meowth's line is replaced with the popular English idiom "Bite off more than you can chew" which basically means they are attempting to do more than they can handle.

Character English Translation Japanese
Rockets It's going to bite us! A Waninoko?!
Meowth We bit off more than we can chew! Could it be the one from earlier?!

Script Error

The English dub specifically states that Totodile used the move Bite (Kamitsuku かみつく) while the Japanese original has Satoshi telling Waninoko to just bite (Kamitsuke 噛みつけ).

Ash: Totodile, Bite attack, now!
Satoshi: Waninoko, bite onto Arbok!

An interesting episode, featuring one of my favorite Pokémon from Satoshi vast collection of Pokémon, from over the different series. I've always loved how happy-go-lucky Waninoko was, always dancing and biting everyone it meets.
The way Satoshi 'catches' it is quite intriguing, since we actually never learn who actually caught it in the first place.

It always amazes me want weird and odd edits are made in the English dub. There was actually a few places where lines were completely cut in this episode. Satoshi's Waninoko is one of my Pokemon in the entire series.

While I liked Totodile with Ash, its because of this that Misty never gets a starter pokemon in the history of the series.

Ash, May, Dawn and Brock all received starter pokemon at some point, but since Ash got both Squirtle and Totodile, Misty never got any water starter.

Come to think of it, Misty only makes one capture over the entire span of Johto, which is her Corsola. Its really odd that the writers never bothered developing Misty's team much, not to mention her Horsea that was just left behind and never amounted to anything.

Its a shame when you think of all the wasted potential from the earlier seasons of the anime, especially in regards to the lack of screentime for Misty in general.
